Washington, D.C. – Today, as President Trump’s trade war with Canada rages on andCanada’s 50% tariffs on American goods take effect, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand issued the following statement:
“President Trump’s costly trade war with Canada is the latest example of the president playing political games at the expense of our economy, our alliances, and American families’ financial security. This trade war with Canada will raise costs for New York families and small businesses who are already struggling to make ends meet.
“Congress must pass my legislation to end these reckless tariffs once and for all and refund Americans for duties they’ve already paid. It’s past time for President Trump to stop the chaos, get back to the negotiation table, and make a deal that lowers costs for American families.”
The president’s tariffs have previously been found to be unconstitutional and have already raised costs on New Yorkers. Poll after poll after poll has found that a resounding majority of Americans oppose Trump’s tariffs actions that have raised prices and hurt their families.
Senator Gillibrand has opposed President Trump’s tariffs since the start of his administration. Shortly after the president levied 50% tariffs on Canada, Senator Gillibrand announced the Banning Antiquated Duties and Delivering Equitable American Levies (BAD DEAL) Act to repeal all tariffs levied under Section 338 of the Tariff Act and refund Americans for all duties paid under this authority—including Trump’s latest 50% tariffs on Canada.
