AMBOY – The Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center will offer Pysanky: The Ancient Art of Ukrainian Egg Decorating on March 18 at 1 p.m. as its 2018 Nature Inspires series commences.
The word pysanka, plural pysanky, comes from the verb pysaty, which means “to write.” Pysanky are made by writing traditional folk designs on eggs with hot beeswax and then dipping them in dyes.
Local artist Anna Perun of Phoenix will demonstrate and teach this beautiful art form.
Perun discovered pysanky, and the tools used to make them, in a small Ukrainian shop and shortly thereafter decided to honor her Ukrainian heritage by teaching herself pysanky and learning the traditional motifs and their ancient significance.
Perun began creating her own pysanky in 1994, a few years after arriving in the United States from Ukraine.
Aside from being very popular around Easter time, Ukrainian pysanky are often given as unique and precious gifts, can be exchanged with friends, make remarkable Christmas tree ornaments, and can be used to create an incomparable display in a home or office at any time of the year.
Nature Inspires is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.
