Led by the outstanding performance of sophomore Vanessa Sheffield, the Oswego girl’s track team, turned in a strong performance, at the Section III Class AA Track and Field Championships, held Thursday afternoon at Rome Free Academy.
Multi event standout Vanessa Sheffield, shattered her previous school record in the triple jump, with a fine leap of 36′ 7 1/4″, the best performance turned in this season in Section 3, to place first for the Lady Bucs in her specialty. She also led off Oswego’s school record breaking 4 x 100 meter relay of Eliza Parker, Alexis Files, and Monique Reeser, who bettered their previous best in the semi finals, with a fast time of 51.6, and came back in the finals, with a fine time of 51.7, to earn 4th place among the section’s elite. Sheffield also finished 4th in the 100 meter hurdles, with a best of 15.6. Sophomore Eliza Parker finished 6th in the race, with a strong time of 16.8.
“Vanessa had a terrific meet” said Coach Jim McCaul “It is hard to believe she is only a sophomore . Her distance in the triple jump, met the State Meet qualifying standard, and puts her in a good position to advance to the State Finals.”
Senior sprinter Monique Reeser, finished 7th in the 100 meter dash for the Lady Bucs, with a quick time of 12.9, a time that will advance her to the State Meet Qualifier. She also ran a personal best time of 27.6 in the 200 meter dash. ” Monique is having another fine season” said McCaul “She has the same competitive spirit and enthusiasm as a senior, that she had as a freshmen.”
In a very competitive race, Oswego’s 4 x 400 meter relay of Files, Ashley Fidler, and seniors Katie DiVita and Liz Donovan, ran a season best time of 4:25.9 . Oswego also turned in a season best in the 4 x 800 meter relay (11:23.3), behind the efforts of Rachel Healy, Mara Parker, Bridgette Auyer, and MacKenzie Dunsmoor.
Other strong efforts for the much improved Lady Bucs were turned in by Eliza Parker in the 200 meter dash (27.9) and junior Jenna Delaney, with a strong time of 1:13.2 in the 400 meter hurdles.
Oswego will close out a very successful season Thursday, traveling to Cicero North Syracuse High School, for the Section III State Meet Qualifier, in hopes of advancing to the New York State Track and Field Championships, to be held June 13th and 14th, at the University of Buffalo.
