Alan Johnson and Jimmy Phelps Grab Big Block Modified Wins; JJ Courcy Wins The Dean Hubbs Memorial At The Brewerton Speedway

By Dave Medler

BREWERTON, NY – Brewerton Speedway which has one of the toughest Big Block Modified weekly fields in the Northeast once again proved that Friday night. In seven feature events run during the 2011 season there have been seven different winners as Alan Johnson and Jimmy Phelps picked up big Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified wins on Nationwide Insurance Night.

JJ Courcy won the Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds Dean Hubbs Memorial, Tim Sears Jr. doubled up in the Sportsman, Jeff Isabell Sr. Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites and Stephen Denton Metalico Four Cylinder Super Stocks also picked up wins.

Alan Johnson picked right up where he left off the week before on lap 15 before the rains came and bolted back out to the lead pulling away from Dan Vauter and the rest of the field to finish the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature.

With 10 laps to go Johnson started putting distance between him and the rest of the field while Mike Mahaney and Jim Davis were in a tight fight for second place. Stewart Friesen, Billy Decker and Matt Sheppard showed third through fifth.

Over the remaining laps Johnson checked out on the field picking the win in his Jake Spraker Used Cars, No.14j Bicknell. Billy Decker, Jim Davis, Stewart Friesen and Mike Mahaney rounded out the top-five.

In the regularly scheduled 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature, Tony Steiner and Jim Witko paced the field with Witko grabbing the early advantage.

With 10 laps showing on the scoring tower Witko running the top of the speedway opened a 20 car advantage, Steiner and Matt Fink raced side by side for 2nd with Dan Vauter and Jimmy Phelps in the top-five.

By lap 15 Phelps had made his way to 2nd and ran down Witko as the two ran side by side for the lead. Dale Planck, Vauter and Billy Decker stayed within striking distance of the two leaders.

Phelps kept the pressure on Witko who was still running the top when on lap 18 Witko slipped up the track allowing Phelps to bolt by and into the lead exiting turn four.

With 10 laps to go Phelps built up a half a straightaway lead, Decker and Witko battled for 2nd as Dale Planck and Alan Johnson showed on the scoring tower.

Over the next few laps Decker ran every inch of the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon” as he reeled in Phelps with Planck joining the battle to the checkers. Phelps wasn’t to be denied as he outran Decker and Planck to the checkers for the narrow win. AMB scoring showed the top-three were only separated by 0.369 seconds at the finish. Alan Johnson and Jim Witko finished fourth and fifth. Decker picked up the Rudy’s Of Oswego Hard Charger Award.

After an emotional tribute to fallen Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified driver Dean Hubbs, Rob Keller paced the missing man formation before the start of the 14th annual 20 lap Dean Hubbs Memorial.

When the green flag flew Keller bolted out to the lead and was a man on a mission as he took early command of the race honoring his longtime friend. While Keller was out front leading, JJ Courcy was hammering the top side of the speedway as he started to shorten the distance lap after lap the lead Keller had built-up.

Not giving up the top side Courcy was able to drive by Keller and be scored the new leader on lap 17. Once in the lead Courcy didn’t just drive away as Keller used his experience from all his Brewerton Speedway wins to give one last ditch effort for victory. On this night Courcy was the first under the checkers picking up the exciting win over Keller. Kevan Cook, Chris Fleming and Rich Keller rounded out the top-five.

The Sportsman ran a pair of 20 lap features. Tim Sears Jr. dominated both legs as he is now three for three in Sportsman events run at the speedway.

In the 20 lap Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lite Feature, Doug Williams started 13th and made quick work of the field as he grabbed the top spot by lap 5 and seemed to be heading to yet another win. On lap 11 and feeling the pressure from Jeff Isabell Sr., Williams spun in turn one handing the lead over to Isabell. Once in the lead Isabell wasn’t to be denied as he picked up the win over Tim Devendorf, Mike Mullen, Joe Garafolo and Jeff Isabell Jr.

Stephen Denton and his Saab remained undefeated in 2011 in the Metalico Four-Cylinder Super Stocks grabbing his seventh in a row. Keith Shay, Chuck Powelczyk, Doug Elkins and Wendall Washington chased Denton across the line.
