Oswego, NY – The Oswego Buc Boosters hosted their biggest Homecoming celebration yet, at their fifth annual BucFest held this past Saturday at Oswego High School’s Joe Wilber Field.
It was a perfect fall day for the festivities. Many followed the Homecoming Parade down Buccaneer Boulevard to the field where students, parents and community members participated in the many games and school spirit building activities.
In addition to some of the favorite games from last year like the Bungee Challenge, 80’ Supreme Obstacle Course, and Bounce House, the BucFest committee added the “Space Ball”, that flips you around while suspended in air, the hi-stryker, electric basketball, and for the first time in BucFest history, an amusement ride called the Side Winder. BucFest Committee Chairperson, Judy Queale-Dunsmoor said. “Every year we introduce new and exciting activities to BucFest so our students of all ages can have a great time. The Buc Boosters’ goal for this event is to offer our students a chance to come together and celebrate being Buccaneers, to show our school pride and to support each other. We keep it affordable and fun.”
The $2.00 admission included the Homecoming football game as the Boosters encouraged attendees to stay and watch. Each entrant received free “Buc Blue Beads” and a snack bag donated by Frito Lay. Most of the games were free.
An annual favorite, the dunk booth was just as crowded as ever, as kids of all ages lined up to dunk their favorite teachers and coaches. There was a repeat appearance by G&G Reptiles and well-known DJ, “Marty the one man party” from radio station 107.9. Twin magicians entertained kids with magic tricks and complimentary balloon sculptures. Another new event to BucFest this year was the Giant Photo Booth, where kids accessorized and then stepped inside to get their photos taken.
The Buc Blue hair and nail salon was in full swing with more kids than ever primping in their favorite Buccaneer blue and white. This event is a favorite with students who don their school colors and then head over to cheer on the Buccaneer football team at Joe Wilber field. Local salon, In Vogue offered feather extensions and hair accessories as well. There were parents and students doing face painting and applying Buccaneer tattoos, a pumpkin painting table, and even a station where one could assemble a “candy lei” filled with their favorite sweets For the first time, the Boosters had a raffle table filled with chances to win everything from health memberships at Stability Fitness to a gift certificate to Midnight Sun and Friendly’s Ice Cream. Many local businesses generously donated these items.
There were delicious treats like New York Bold blooming onions and Gibby O’Connor’s pulled pork sandwiches and chili. There was also fried dough, snow cones, candy apples, pizza and a variety of foods available at the concession stand.
In addition, the brand new BucFest 2012 t-shirts, designed by Oswego advertising firm, Step One Creative, were available for purchase.
“It was a fantastic day all around,” commented committee member Lu Collins. “BucFest was a huge success and hundreds of people stayed to share the excitement of the varsity football’s team’s Homecoming win over the New Hartford Spartans. There was Buccaneer energy and pride that I haven’t seen in a long time. It was fun to be part of it.”
Finally, the brand new Buccaneer mascot led the parade and the Homecoming fans with a great show of school spirit. The professionally created mascot was a combined project accomplished by the Buc Boosters and the Oswego City School District. He mingled with the BucFest participants and volunteers.
Crystal Dudley who coordinated the volunteers for this year’s BucFest said “we are so thankful for the parents, faculty and community members who helped out this year, and to our many generous sponsors without whom this fantastic event would not have been possible. A huge thanks goes out to each and every one of you.”
