Bucs Celebrate Homecoming Victory

A successful Oswego High School Homecoming Weekend saw the varsity football team win in double overtime, the girls’ volleyball team coming home with a championship and the golf team continuing an unbelievable streak while the mod cross country teams were also doing quite well.

OT “W” for Bucs

A four touchdown day by Alex Makin combined with late game heroics of a goal line stand by the Oswego varsity football team defense proved the difference in the Bucs 26-19 overtime win against Fulton on Saturday.

Homecoming weekend was a celebration for Oswego in an even matched, very intense high school football game.

In overtime Makin ran it in from four yards out and Ryan Lavner kicked his second consecutive successful point after touchdown to give the Bucs the seven point lead. The run was set up by a big run by Zach Crisafulli.

Fulton had its turn and stayed on the ground. On a third and three Trey Love hit Keyshon Carver for a loss and a fourth down pass went high and out of bounds for the Raiders.

The end of regulation was wild as Alex Makin had scored on a 33-yard run as he got an extra point from Lavner. It was 19-19, but Fulton had plenty of time to win this one.

With just over 80 seconds to go in regulation Fulton had the ball. Raider running back Mark Pollack was apparently headed for the end zone when Justin Canale caught him and tackled him at the six yard line. Jake Rodriguez took down the Fulton quarterback Cody Green for a loss and Garrett Dunsmoor caught Carver behind the line of scrimmage for a two-yard loss.

It was an offensive explosion in the first 12 minutes of the game as Fulton held a 13-12 lead after one quarter of play.

On the opening possession Cody Green ran it in from the one and Jon Cummins had the point after. However, Oswego came right back with a seven yard touchdown run by Makin. Fulton went back on top as Quintan Jackson took a Green pass 24 yards to the end zone and the PAT was blocked for a 13-6 Fulton lead.  As the quarter wound down Makin had his second of the day from five yards out.

The teams went to halftime with Fulton maintaining the 13-12 lead.

In the third Fulton began to open it up with a Green to Jones eight yard scoring strike and it was 19-12. Makin from 33 yards cut the deficit to 19-18, but Lavner powered a kick through the uprights for a 19-19 count after three quarters.

Makin finished the game with 212 yards on 27 carries.

Coach Ron Ahart said,  “At the end of the day, in the semi-finals against Jamesville-DeWitt  and in the last two sets we played some inspired volleyball. I was a little worried in set one of the championship when we fell behind quickly 10-0, but the team rallied in sets two and three and with a solid all around team effort won the championship of the Silver Bracket in a very tough tournament. Seniors Erica Atkins and Madison Collins both had good tournaments and the rest of the team all contributed in some way.”

Golfers Sweep Four In Week

The Oswego High School boys golf team completed another undefeated week, making it two weeks in a row without a loss.

Alec Kunzwiler had his fourth under par nine of the season, shooting a one-under 34 at Brooklawn Golf Club in Syracuse. It was his third consecutive match score under par, a team record according to Coach Dan Rose.

Rose said, “I’ve seen many under par nines in my seven years as head coach, but three in a row is pretty special.”

Joining Alec in the scoring column on Friday were players Josh Dumas 39, Sam Oleyourryk 40, Eric Demidowicz 41, and Brandon Tracz 41.

Alec and the boys look to finish off the season on Monday at home versus Liverpool. Depending on what happens around the league, Oswego may find themselves atop the CNYCL American League.

“We are just taking it one shot at a time,” said Coach Rose about the possibility of a league championship. “We’ll see how the chips fall on Monday.”

The Bucs have now moved their record to an improbable 11-5 after starting the season 3-5.

Oswego will compete in the Sectional Championship on Wednesday at The Links at Sunset Ridge in Marcellus.
