Bucs Sports Teams Continue Winning Ways

OSWEGO, NY – Success on the softball and baseball field as well as the track have Oswego sports off and winning as the spring sports season is well under way.

Lady Bucs Rally Over Bees

The Oswego High School varsity softball team rallied with three runs in its final at-bat to gain a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over Baldwinsville on Monday.

Trailing 2-0 entering the seventh inning, Laura Miceli got things started with a single to center.

After Jess Slight was hit by a pitch, Taylor Maas advanced both runners into scoring position with a perfectly-executed sacrifice bunt. Allie Yule loaded the bases with an infield single. Michele Canale drove Miceli home with a sacrifice fly to left, making it 2-1 Bees.

With two outs, Devynn Wilder grounded sharply to short, but the throw that would’ve ended the game went wide, allowing both Slight and Yule to score.

Emily Kolenda, in relief of starter Laura Miceli, picked up her first varsity win by retiring 9 of the 10 hitters she faced.

Marissa Canale led Oswego’s 7-hit attack with a pair of singles, with Yule, Wilder, Michele Canale, and Erika Lazzaro adding one apiece.

The Lady Bucs are now 2-1 on the young season.

On the weekend the Lady Bucs lost a hard fought 4-3 verdict to defending Section III champion Liverpool.

The Bucs held a 3-2 lead after four, but the visitors were able to muster single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings.

Demo Throws Five-Hitter for Buc Nine

Oswego won its second game of the season in varsity baseball action on Monday with a 5-1 verdict over visiting Henninger.

It was a pitching duel for the first five innings as the game was tied at 1-1 after four.

In the top of the fifth Demo held Henninger scoreless, but the Bucs finally went up for good with a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 2-1 lead.

One inning later Oswego put three runs across the plate for a commanding 5-1 advantage.

Demo finished with surrendering five hits, fanned seven and walked just two.

At the plate Corey Galletta had a home run and two RBI’s on the day. Dan Montagnola had three walks, a stolen base and one run while Autie Ascenzi and Adam Clawson each had an RBI.  Mike Brown also scored a run and chalked up a stolen base while runs were also scored by Tyler Perez and Demo.

Oswego improved its record to 2-1.

Varsity Lady Bucs Lacrosse Splits

The last two games the Oswego Lady Bucs varsity lacrosse team played resulted in a 13-12 score.

Against Auburn the Bucs rallied for victory, but against Liverpool it was a one goal loss.

In the victory over the Maroons Maia Czarnecki and Amanda D’Amico scored four goals apiece while Tayler Giglio tallied two and Kaitlin Armstrong and Leah Folgherait each had one.

Taylor Bowman had 16 saves for the Bucs.

Oswego lost its first game of the season as the Warriors of Liverpool gained a one goal win.

Giglio and D’Amico each scored three goals while Czarnecki added two and also scoring were Samantha McCarrick, Taylar Cianfarano, Armstrong and Folgherait.

Bowman faced an onslaught of shots as she was credited with 32 saves as the Warriors had 45 shots on net. Oswego had a respectable offensive showing with 28 shots.

Boys’ Track Team Scores Single Point Win

The Oswego High School varsity boys track team opened its season on Thursday with a 69-68 win over visiting Central Square.

The meet was close all the way, as Central Square held the advantage in the running events (48-39). Oswego outscored the Red Hawks 30-20 in the field events.

“I thought the boys all did a nice job on the cold and windy day as they never gave up in any of the events,” Oswego coach Erwin Dewey said. “This was a real team win as everybody contributed.”

Alejandro Lara did very well in the pole vault as he was the only one to clear a height on the day. He earned five big points with his win.

Cory Keefe had an excellent day for the Bucs. He won the 100-meter dash (11.9) and the 200-meter dash (23.9), and placed second in the 110-meter high hurdles. His time in the hurdles was 16.7, the same time as the event winner.

The Bucs’ 4 x 100-meter relay team of Keefe, Dan Cirino, Brent Denny, and Ryan Jock ran a fast time of 47.1 to place first.

Eli Tyler had a super day for Oswego. He won the 400-meter hurdles (62.4), the 400-meter dash (55.2), and the triple jump (38’ 1”).

“Eli, a senior, is stepping up and is a real leader on the team,” Dewey said.

Cody Sivils came through with a nice win in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:13.2.
Jock had a good day in his first meet, as he won the long jump (17’ 11.5”).

In the high jump, Dylan Lavner and Cirino shared first place as each cleared 5’ 8”.

Denny, a freshman, placed second in the long jump (16’ 9.75”) as he continues to improve.

Mitch Maniccia placed second in the shot put (43’ .25”). He was beaten out for the win by three-quarters of an inch.

Contributing third-place finishes for the Bucs were Sivils in the 1,600 meters and Miguel Vazquez in the 400 meters. Vazquez turned in his best time ever in the event (56.7).

Mike Ruggio placed third in the shot put with a personal-best distance of 41’ 3.25” as he continues to improve.

Oswego will compete Thursday at Nottingham.

Jayvee Sports Action

The Lady Buc jayvee softball team dropped  its season opener 7-1 at Baldwinsville. Ashlee Wapen tripled and singled. Wapen scored the only run on a nice safety squeeze by Cortnie Purce. MacKenzie King and Sara Mancuso singled.

Wapen and King shared the pitching duties for Oswego (0-1).  Oswego will travel to CNS on Tuesday.

The Lady Bucs jayvee lacrosse team lost at Liverpool on Friday by the score of 13-6.

Even in defeat, the Bucs showed great improvement over their performance in game one.  The defense was much more aggressive, with better defensive awareness and teamwork.

On offense the team moved the ball much better while getting many scoring opportunities.  Leading the Bucs offense were Alexa Healy with three goals, Kelsey Ross two goals and Catie Geroux one goal.
