The championship of the Festival of Lights Bowling Tournament in Niagara Falls has been a desire and goal for the Oswego High School Buccaneers.
On Monday, the Bucs competed in the annual holiday event and came away with the championship.
Oswego captured the boys’ team title with 6,317 for six games, but had to rally to win.
In the morning segment, Tonawanda A held a 167 pin lead over the Bucs.
But, when it was over Oswego finished 65 pins better than Frontier A (6,252) and Tonawanda A finished third (5,936).
Chad Mee of Frontier captured the top pinfall with 1,503, he was trailed by Joe Clavelli (Oswego) with 1,398 who was second overall while Matt Clemons rolled 1,292 for fifth overall high.

Lady Buc Cagers Win
The Oswego High School Lady Bucs basketball team scored a decisive 59-37 win over Fulton in the latest outing at Powers Gym.
Oswego used an explosive first half to run away from the visitors and earn win number four on the year.
It was 17-8 after the first quarter and 35-17 by halftime. The Bucs exploded for a 23-3 run at one time during the first 16 minutes of play.
Senior Erica Atkins paced the way for the Bucs with 13 points, but there was balanced scoring with McKenna Brooks with a dozen and Marguerite Dillon with 10.
Completing the scoring were Claire Richardson with six, Rachael Purtell with five, Siara Wilson four, Brenna Riley four, Reilly Patrick three and Madelyn Muckey two.
Indoor Track Excels
In a meet highlighted by many personal best efforts, the Oswego varsity indoor track team, turned in a strong performance at the Oscar B. Jensen Holiday Relays, held Monday at the SRC Arena on the campus of Onondaga Community College. This meet was held in honor of longtime track coach Oscar Jensen, a pioneer in the development of indoor track in the section and throughout the state.
Junior Armand Vooris led the Oswego boys, running a best of 41.33 in the 300 meter dash, to finish first in his race.
Junior Paul Oleyourryk, lowered his previous best in the 1000 meter run by over four seconds, to place second in his section. He also turned in a three foot improvement in the shot put. Sophomore Santiago Orta earned bests in the 300 meter dash and the shot put, with an improvement of over four feet.
Other bests included Brad Patterson in the 55 meter dash, Alex Flack in the 600 meter run, Nate Greene in the triple jump, and Austin Attwood in the 600 meter run and mile run.
The Lady Bucs were led by the fine performances of freshmen Sarah Fitzgibbons and sophomore Olivia Flint. Fitzgibbons outdistanced everyone in her 1000 meter race, with an outstanding time of 3:43.06. Flint placed first in her section of the 600 meter run, running a best of 2:02.8 and earned a best in the 55 meter hurdles.
Senior Deandra Smith earned a best in her 300 meter race, with a time of 52.57, to finish second. Junior Grace Gilbert, shattered her previous best in the 600 meter run by over 7 seconds, running a fine time of 2:00.2. Other bests for the rapidly improving Bucs were earned by Lilly Distin in the 55 meter hurdles, Lexi Hanna in the 300 meter dash, and Hannah Cain and Chloe Patterson in the 55 meter dash.
Cagers Split
The Oswego High School varsity boys’ basketball team finished third in the Bishop Ludden holiday tournament.
Ludden, the number one ranked team in Section III, scored a 64-44 win over Oswego in the first round.
Ryan Lavner had a 25 point performance while Matt Giudilli had nine points.
The Bucs did win the consolation game with a 48-42 decision over New Hartford.
Zach Gillard had a 20 point night and Lavner added ten while Mylek Hoyt scored eight for the 3-4 Bucs.
Buc Hockey Loss
A key early season game between Clinton and Oswego ice hockey teams was a defensive struggle with the visitors scoring a 1-0 win over the Bucs.
Clinton scored its only goal of the game very late in the first period as Lucas Hamline scored and Peter Burke picked up the assist.
The remainder of the game saw both teams with several power play opportunities, but neither was able to cash in on the advantage.
In the end Oswego goalie Donovan Roy had 15 saves while Clinton net minder Joe Bonanza stopped 15 Buc shots.
Oswego moved to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in league play to sit in third place in the National Conference while Clinton moved to 5-4-1 overall and 4-0 in National play.
Last Friday, the Bucs skated against Liverpool and lost 5-2.
The Bucs pulled out to a 2-0 first period lead, but Liverpool came back to tie it up 2-2 after one and scored the next three goals to clinch the game.
For the Bucs Jake Oleyourryk and Ben Brosch each had a goal while Sean Mooney had two assists.
In net, Roy had 24 saves while at the other end of the ice Steven Koziloski had 17 stops for the visitors.
Rodriguez Captures Title
The Oswego wrestling team competed in the Ken Haines Tournament on December 27.
Oswego 220 pounder Jake Rodriguez became the first Oswego champion at this tournament as he finished 4-0. He started out by pinning Steve Heller of Camden in 75 seconds and then blanked John Dunn of Marcellus 3-0. He then pinned Fulton’s Matt Marshall in 3:09 before finishing the day with a 3-2 victory over Ron Wilson of Liverpool.
Eric Doviak, at 285, finished with a 2-1 record to finish second. He pinned John Bouck of Mexico in 1:40- before scoring a 7-2 double overtime victory over Dave Carnie of Liverpool. He lost the title match to Cameron Rohr of Irondequoit as he was pinned in 5:31.
Jordan Attwood, at 152, finished in fifth place with a 6-2 record in a very crowded class. He started with a 4:28 pin of Jon Sheeley of APW-Pulaski and then lost to Jay Kisselstein of Mexico in a pin at 4:51. Attwood then had to battle his way back and pinned Nate Lukins of Marcellus in 2:54, pinned Zach Hatem of JD-CBA in 2:15, pinned Dart Corwin of Victor in 3:39 before losing to Kisselstein again 5-2. He finished the tournament with a 4-1 win over Jacob Bailey of Fulton.
Jordan Perchway, at 145, started with a major 11-1 decision over Sam Legro of East Syracuse-Minoa and came right back with a 4-2 verdict over Aaron Yablonski of Fulton. He then lost to Garrett Mitchell of Camden 13-0 and headed for the wrestle backs. He lost to Collin Flynn of Fulton in 4:13 and came back with a 5-1 win over Jalen Carr of Fairport. Perchway won again as he pinned Anthony Sasso of Horace Greeley in 1:15 and then decisioned Carr of Fairport 7-0. He finished the tournament with a 4-3 double overtime win over Owen Lawther of Fairport to finish ninth.
At 113 Austin Coleman finished eighth overall with only one day in action. He started with an 8-4 win over Hunter Howland of Mexico and then lost to Mike Venosa of Victor 9-2. Coleman pinned Ty Harter of Camden in 4:37 then lost his final two matches by forfeits to Dennis Hilts of Camden and Bakatash Azizi of Fairport as he was unable to make weight for the second day of action.
Other Bucs in action included Tom Allen at 138 as he lost to Alex Regan of ESM 16-0, was pinned by Evan Ocke of Fairport in 2:22 and was outscored 11-2 by Regan to complete his tournament action.
Zac Caruso, at 182, lost to Colton White of Guilderland via a pin in 30 seconds, fell to Hunter Hilton of APW-Pulaski in 1:18 and was pinned in 1:19 by Bryan Pert of Chenango Valley in 1:19.
Austin Piazza lost his first match at 195 to Thad Casler when he was pinned in 3:00. And then lost two forfeits to Keith Hendriz of Cato-Meridian and Chris Bortel of Fayetteville-Manlius.
In team scoring Fairport won the tournament by a point and a half over Newark Valley with a 215.5-214. Fulton was third with 207 followed by Mexico and Liverpool. Oswego finished15th in the 25 team field.
Jayvee Girls’ 7-0
The Oswego Lady Bucs jayvee basketball team remained unbeaten with a 62-33 victory over Fulton.
The combination of hard work and team play resulted in yet another win.
Fulton stayed with the Bucs’ in the first half with a score of 33-20. Oswego dominated Fulton on the offensive glass making it hard for Fulton to get any second chance shots.
Oswego pulled away in the second half with a final score of 62-33.
Leading scorers for the Bucs’ were Jenna McManus with 16 points, Michele Lavery with 11 points, Kelly Skinner with 11 points and 12 rebounds and Olivia Dowdle with nine points and four assists.
