Bucs Win Season-Opening Ice Hockey Game

OSWEGO, NY – Fred Donabella scored on a rebound with just over four minutes remaining as the Oswego Bucs captured the season opening ice hockey game over Spencerport by a 4-3 margin.

Oswego played a solid all-around game under new coach Andy Rozak, but one of the major keys to victory was the goaltending of sophomore Chase Izyk who finished with 34 saves.

The first goal of the year game with 9:45 to go in the first period as Josh Sova scored on a short-handed situation as he cashed in from the right side of the net and the first period ended with the Bucs leading 1-0.

However, Spencerport came up with three second period goals while the Bucs were able to gain one to keep it within one goal.

In the second period, Donabella scored unassisted as he fired his own rebound past Spencerport’s Tyler Fess.

In closing seconds of the middle period just 19 ticks were left on the clock as Izyk stopped the shot, but the rebound was cashed in by Michael Chiappone for a 3-2 lead for the visitors.

Oswego came up with two third period goals as Austin Tracz put in a rebound with just under 11 minutes to go in the game and then Donabella had the winner late in the period.

Donabella finished up with two goals and an assist while Sova had a goal and two assists on the day.

Bucs Open Up Wrestling Tournament

Oswego wrestlers headed to Cicero-North Syracuse for the Anderson Tournament.

Dan Ellingwood finished four and lost twice to a Section IV champion while Mike Ruggio finished sixth as he defeated a Section IV champ in the first round.

At 160 Ellingwood finished 3-2 as he pinned George Dobbins of Lyons in 1:35 and then lost to Zach Cummings of Gouvenour 8-2. He came back with a pin of Jim Rolison of Windsor in 4:48 before gaining a 4-1 decision over over James Segars. He ended the day with a 4:15 loss to Zach Cummings to finish in fourth.

Ruggio, at 171, started off with a 3:42 pin over Jacob Moose of Canton and then won 3-2 over Brandon Giaquinto of Amsterdam. Bill Koemel of IHC pinned Ruggio on 1:34. He then also lost to Matt Nichols of West Genesee 7-2 and lost via a pin in 59 seconds to Dave Whitman of Windsor.

At 135 Jordan Pluff finished eighth as he lost to Blain Tiller of Canandaigua via a technical fall in 4:48 and lost to Dillon Woodruff of Canton in 1:59.

Modified Volleyball Gains Win

The modified blue volleyball team battled Central Square.

Coach Ted Beers said, “We had a great week, we beat both of the Central Square teams this week and it gave us a big confidence boost.  Our serving has been key for us the last few matches and the amount of aces we have had shows it. The girls have been coming together well and we have given other teams some hard fought sets. It is fun to watch their continued improvement as we go along with the last three weeks of the season.”

Against Central Square in the first night of action the Bucs won 25-17 and then lost 25-17 before gaining a 25-22 win in the third.

The fourth game saw Oswego lost again 25-16 and the Bucs won the finale 25-17.

Miranda Clary had three aces, Morgan Demong an ace while Mary Dowling had 10 aces and one assist. Allie Henderson also had an assist. Natasha Mezza had a kill, three aces and two digs. Claire Richardson had three aces. Brenna Riley finished with two kills, an ace and four blocks. Kelly Skinner also had an ace.

Oswego also went five games to win again. The Bucs won 25-23, but lost the second 25-13 and won the third 25-11. Central Square won the fourth 25-12 and in the last game the Bucs won 25-19. Hannah Broadwell had two aces and two digs while Miranda Clary had a dig. Allie Henderson had five aces and Jordan McCauley had a kill and 20 aces. Natasha Mezza had three aces, Jordan Oatman had a dig, Claire Richardson an ace, while Kelly Skinner had two digs. Brenna Riley also had two kills, two aces and two digs.
