Buffalo State tops Oswego State women’s basketball team

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s basketball team (14-5, 8-4 SUNYAC) fell to the Buffalo State Bengals (11-8, 7-5 SUNYAC) for the second time this season, losing 65-56 on Friday night in Buffalo.

The Bengals outscored the Lakers 43-26 in the second half to sweep the season series.

Buffalo State hit 17-of-19 attempts from the charity stripe to ice the victory, its third straight and sixth in the last seven games. The loss breaks the Lakers two-game winning streak.

Unlike last time these teams matched up, it was the Bengal guards who did most of the damage. Mariah Norris and Olivia Luciani combined for 24 points, nine rebounds and three steals while going 10-for-10 from the free throw line.

The Lakers were the better team in the first half, especially in the latter stages. Oswego State outscored the Bengals 9-0 in the final 5:18 of the first half to gain a 30-22 lead at the break.

However, the Bengals began the second half on an 15-2 running to gain control of the game. During the stretch, the Bengals forced five Laker turnovers. Oswego State totaled 16 turnovers in the game, while Buffalo State committed 15.

Kari Kipper (Sr., Loudonville, N.Y.) ended the streak with a three-pointer, but it was the only trey she would make on five attempts. Oswego State climbed to within two points at 43-41, but the Bengals unleashed a 14-5 run to put the game out of reach.

Meagan Stover (Sr., Lake George, N.Y.) led the Lakers with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Kassie Kleine (Sr., Cazenovia, N.Y.) was the only other Oswego State player in double digits with 11 points.

The Lakers are back in action tomorrow (Feb. 2), as they travel to Fredonia to face the Blue Devils at 2 p.m. missing or outdated ad config
