Celebrate Fourth of July at Oswego Speedway with Grand Prix Features, Christmas in July, and Fireworks

OSWEGO, NY – The summer schedule at Oswego Speedway officially kicks into high gear Saturday, July 5, with the Speedway’s annual Grand Prix Night, featuring extra distance main events, the return of Christmas in July, and a spectacular fireworks display to end the night presented by Canale Insurance – Fleet Pride – and Seminis.

On the racing front, fans will be treated to 110-laps of feature racing with the Novelis Supermodified Grand Prix 75 and the Pathfinder Bank Small Block Super Grand Prix 35.

Dave Gruel is looking to return to victory lane for the first time in 2014 in defense of his Grand Prix 75 victory one year ago at Oswego Speedway.

With the Speedway taking the week off on June 28, all competitors will be charged and ready to take on the ‘Steel Palace’ for another Fourth of July special, which has taken place at the Speedway since 1953.

A Fourth of July victory at the Speedway has long been a special occurrence, since Nolan Swift won the first in an A-Modified in ’53.

Since then, 32 drivers have won a headline Fourth of July main at the Speedway, with legendary Bentley Warren winning more than any other, visiting victory lane seven times on Fourth of July Weekend (1969, 1976, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, and 1993.)

Behind Warren on the all-time Fourth of July win list is a who’s who in Supermodified racing including Swift, Jim Shampine, Eddie Bellinger Jr., and Doug Didero, all with four victories apiece.

Joining the list of Fourth of July winners in 2013 was Dave Gruel, driving the Lighthouse Lanes No. 50, becoming the 32nd different driver to do so.  This season Gruel hopes to repeat, earning his first victory for his new Gruel Racing No. 50 team.

Returning to Grand Prix Night for the second consecutive season will be Christmas in July, bringing a touch of the Christmas season to the ‘Steel Palace.’

Every fan that brings a new and unwrapped toy to the Speedway on Saturday will receive a free hot dog combo meal, courtesy of the Speedway, with all toys once again being donated to Toys for Tots of Oswego County.

Fans are encouraged to bring the entire family as Santa Claus will once again make an appearance at the Speedway on Saturday at 6pm below the main grandstand in the Speedway’s Tiki Bar.

Christmas in July will also feature a best decorated pit contest for Speedway competitors, as well as best decorated push truck, and best dressed crew member or Speedway employee.

Ending the evening of racing and fun will again be a gigantic fireworks display to cap the night and put a patriotic finishing touch on the Speedway’s Fourth of July celebration.

Fans are also reminded that Saturday will be the second Novelis Fan Can Chase Night of the year.  Bring your aluminum cans for recycling for a chance to win Speedway race tickets.  Redemptions will take place in front of the Speedway from 3-6 p.m.

Grand Prix Night and Christmas in July will also be a Price Chopper Tickets to Go event with tickets available at any Price Chopper Supermarkets location for only $14.  As always kids 16 and under are free with a paid adult.

Grandstand gates will open on Saturday with the beginning of hot laps at 4 p.m. Santa Claus will be available for the kids at 6 p.m., with the night’s first heat race taking the green at 6:30 p.m.
