Darling Scores Hat Trick; Varsity & JV Defeat Auburn

It was a 5-1 sweep for the Oswego boys varsity and JV soccer squads against Auburn on Saturday.

The varsity started slowly and remained scoreless until the 30 minute mark of the first half wen Jeff Schmidt threw the ball in to Nate Pacheco who one-touched a pass to Kris Darling who lofted a shot over the head of Auburn goalie Adam Cadwallader.

The scored remained 1-0 at halftime.

Coach Don Fronk said, “We spoke at halftime about coming out in the second and playing with more intensity. Our hope was to put Auburn out of the game early in the second half.”

The Bucs accomplished the desire of their coach. Darling found the back of hte net with just under nine minutes gone as he finished off a pass from Steve Auyer. About 10 minutes later Patrick Holland gave the Bucs a three goal cushin as Kristopher Baum assisted.

Two minutes later Darling completed his hat trick as he finished off a pass from his brother Antonio. Soph David Caramella rounded out the scoring with his first varsity goal with just over seven minutes remaining in the game.

Auburn managed one goal as Jeremy Bennett scored.

Fronk said, “Once we went up 5-0 we had a momentary lapse of concentration and gave up the loose ball. Our defense was solid for most of the game. Today we had just one lapse.” Continuing he said, “Overall we played very well in the second half, we moved the ball through the middle of the field. We started a new goalie today in frosh Matt Skinner and I thought he played very well for his first varsity game.” Skinner finished with five saves while his counterpart Cadwallader had 16 saves.

Action was fast in the ealry going, but Oswego came out with much more intensity that it had displayed in recent games.

Just 10 minutes in Kevin Suchnicki scored off a well placed pass from Aaron Marsallo. However, Auburn came back to tie.

Coach Blake Cunningham said, “From that point on we were in complete control.”

A late goal in the first half came off a well placed free kick from Wes Smith was blocked by the keeper, but bounced into the box as Mike Hart was right there to put it away for a 2-1 halftime lead.

The second half was all Oswego. Aaron Marsallo dribbled the ball to the box and found the back of the net. Jacob Orta ten scored the final two of the game as one was on a blistering shot and the other off a well placed corner kick from Suchnicki as Orta headed the ball into the back of the net.
