Decker Becomes First Big Block Modified Repeat Winner At Fulton Speedway

FULTON, NY – June 30, 2012 (By Dave Medler) -Coming into Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway, the question was, would the different winners streak continue in the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds, or would there be a first repeat winner?

Billy Decker answered that question, as he took advantage of a late race restart getting by Matt Fink for his second win of the 2012 season on the Fulton Speedway “High Banks”.

Other winners on K-ROCK 100.9-106.5/ RFH’s Hide-A-Way Night were, Greg Mrzywka SUNY Canton Sportsman, Larry Wight NAPA Late Models, Justin Crisafulli E&V Energy Novice Sportsman and Matt Dawson Parts Plus Four Cylinder Stocks.

Shane Donath and Mike Bowman paced the field down to the green flag, with Mike Bowman snagging the early lead in the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature.

By lap 5, Bowman opened a comfortable lead and he was being pursued by Matt Fink who ran alone in second. Jim Witko, Donath and Pat Ward fought for third through fifth.

From lap 5 to lap 8, Fink ran down, and in a bold move, Fink bolted around Bowman to be scored the new leader on lap 9.

With 15 laps showing on the scoring tower, Fink built-up a half a straightaway lead over Bowman. Witko, Billy Decker and Ward ran side by side and nose to tail for top-five spots.

By lap 20, Fink was still leading, but Bowman started to close in as they started to catch back markers and put them down a lap. Decker, Witko and Ward still showed in the top-five as they kept the top-two in sight.

A caution flag would fly on lap 23, something the top-two didn’t want to see as Decker was the fastest car on the speedway.

When the green came back out, Fink got a great restart and opened an advantage on the rest of the field.

With 10 laps to go, Decker was closing in quick on Fink. Ward, Bowman and now Ryan Phelps raced for third through fifth.

The last caution of the race would come out with two laps go, putting Decker, Ward and Larry Wight right with Fink for the shootout to the finish.

On the restart, Fink would shoot-up the track exiting turn four allowing Decker to shoot by and into the lead and then go on to the win. Matt Fink, Larry Wight, Tim Sears Jr. and Pat Ward finished second through fifth. Tom Sears Jr., Mike Mahaney, Ryan Phelps, Chad Phelps and Mike Bowman completed the top-ten.

“If you don’t get a workout in three and four, you’re not driving hard enough,” Billy Decker said about a tough 35 laps on a hot humid night, after exiting his Gypsum Wholesalers/ Stadium International Trucks/Integra Racing Shocks/ No.91/Bicknell.

Decker then talked about catching Fink and the pass for the lead and the win.

“Just trying to run Matt (Fink) down was tough, he was running a great race. The track is pretty challenging. I was just trying to get in position if he lost his nose, or if something happened, I could capitalize.”

“Really, he wasn’t in a favorable position on the restart. We were packing the top, while he had to keep doing what he was doing (As the leader) the hole off of four was getting deeper and deeper. I just tried to get a good angle on  the exit if he did lose his nose I could take advantage of it, and that’s what happened.”

Before the night started, Greg Mrzywka’s father was kidding around saying if there was trouble to be found in 2012 it would find his son, right down to turning his car over one night after getting caught up in an accident.

All that changed Saturday night as Mrzywka was able to grab the early on in the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature and then go on to his first win of the 2012 season. Greg Kimball, Katelyn Kane, Rocco Leone and Tom Juhl finished second through fifth. Jim Spano, Matt Emmons, Jordan Bennett, Jeremy Pitcher and Dave Emmons completed the top-ten.

Larry Wight totally dominated the 20 lap NAPA Late feature picking the win up over, Sean Beardsley, Tim Sears Jr. Alan Fink, Rick Miller and Aaron Jacobs.

Former Beaver River Distribution Mod Lite Driver Justin Crisafulli picked up his first ever win in the 15 lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman feature. Kyle Fink, Gary Hoppins, Brian Harber and Bailey Groves chased Crisafulli across the line.

Matt Dawson brought out a new car Saturday night for the 15 lap Parts Plus Four Cylinder feature. The new car paid off, as Dawson brought home the feature win over, Colby Herzog, Jon Shumway, Blake Fisher and Eric M Zirbel.

This coming Saturday, July 7 NAPA and Capital Home Improvements presents another big night of racing featuring, the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds, SUNY Canton Sportsman, NAPA Late Models, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman, Parts Plus Four Cylinder Stocks and Mod Lites.
