F-M Downs Oswego In Girls Swimming

By coach Josh Lerch

Oswego was unable to stop a very strong F-M team tonight.  Oswego’s Lady Bucs did step up and swim fast, howeveer.

Seniors Mo Donovan and Katie Metcalf led the push with some outstanding swims.  Mo swam a personal best in the 50 yard freestyle (28.11) and an inseason best in the 500 yard freestyle (5:50.92).  Katie swam an inseason best time of 1:04.81 in the 100 yard backstroke.

Juniors Sarah Miller and Iveliz Lopez also had some great events.  Sarah won the 200 yard freestyle in an inseason best time of 1:17.12 and also swam an inseason best time in the 500 yard freestyle (6:13.04).  Iveliz swam a personal best time in the 500 yard freestyle (6:01.28) and then followed that 2 events later with a best time in the 100 yard backstroke (1:11.46) qualifying her for Sectional’s in the event for the first time.

Sophomores Haley Annal, Michaela Auer, and Mara Parker also added to the Oswego offensive.  Haley swam personal best times in both the 100 yard butterfly (1:09.02) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:24.36).  Michaela Auer placed second in both the 50 yard freestyle (26.63) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:12.89).  Mara added a best time in the 100 yard freestyle, coming in at 59.53.  This is the first time that Mara has broken a minute, which is a great feat in swimming.

Freshman Kaila McClelland and Michaela Kearns stepped up as well.  Kaila swam her best time this season in the 200 yard Individual Medley (2:36.53) and a lifetime best in the 100 yard backstroke (1:12.83).  Michaela has shown an ability to go lifetime bests in almost every event each meet and this one was no different.  She started by dropping a bit in her 200 Individual Medley (3:08.05) and then dropped quite a bit in her 100 yard freestyle coming in at 1:10.21.

Eighth grader Chrissy Abare also had a meet of lifetime bests.  She swam an outstanding 2:19.99 in the 200 yard freestyle to place second and then went a best in the 100 yard freestyle later in the meet (1:02.80)

I have been so impressed with this team this season.  Not because they give me their best each meet, that is a Lady Buc tradition that continues to live strong with these girls, but because they give me their best even when the outcome of the meet is clearly not in their favor.  F-M took control of this meet a few events in, and although we continued to put up impressive times, F-M continued to pull away.  Not one girl asked me the score of the meet until it was all over, they just got excited for their events and they cheered for their teammates during theirs.

I watched one my best swimmers, sophomore Michaela Auer, get out of the water after nearly beating her best inseason time in the 100 yard breaststroke, and then dive back in the water five minutes later to lead our 400 freestyle relay to victory with her best 100 freestyle time this season.  She could barely walk after because her legs were so beat.  I couldn’t ask for more from these girls.
