OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team (3-4, 0-1 SUNYAC) trailed by one goal near the end of the first half, but Fredonia (7-0, 1-0) rattled off eight straight goals as the Lakers fell, 13-5, on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils were paced by Katie Kleine, who tallied four goals and three assists, and Marissa Cussins, who posted five goals.
Oswego State struck first when Esther Gabriel (Fr., Lancaster, N.Y.) found Mackenzie Kjerstad (Jr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) streaking toward the cage for her ninth goal of the season less than two minutes into the game. Fredonia’s Katie Kleine posted the first of her three free-position goals with 21:28 on the scoreboard to tie the contest. The Blue Devils scored twice over the next fifteen minutes, but Candace Tarana (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) buried a pass from Erannan Shattuck (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) to pull the Lakers to within one with 5:25 remaining in the first half. However, Cussins notched back-to-back goals in a minute span to send Fredonia into the halftime with a 5-2 lead.
Cussins stayed hot in the second half as she found the back of the cage in the opening minute after receiving a pass from Kleine. The goal was the first of six straight Blue Devils markers in the frame to put the visitors out in front, 11-2.
Kaila Curatalo (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) ending the streak with her third goal of the season followed shortly by Corinne Marsh hitting Danielle Citro (Sr., Miller Place, N.Y.) with a pass as she was cutting towards the crease to make the score 11-4. Fredonia added a pair of goals from Kleine and Glagolev minutes later before Courtney Cosentino (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) closed out the scoring on a nice look from Marsh.
Oswego State owned a 32-22 advantage in groundballs, but that was offset by 24 turnovers. Fredonia struggled early in the game clearing the ball before finishing the game 12-of-17 in clear attempts compared to Oswego State going 10-for-18.
Laker goalie Nikki Greco (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) led the team with four groundballs while making 11 saves. Casey Chiesa earned the win for the Blue Devils after making four saves.
Oswego State looks to get back into the win column when it faces Geneseo on Tuesday at South Athletic Field for a 4 p.m. tilt.
