Michelle Bateman’s (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) goal in the 21st minute proved to be the difference maker as the Oswego State women’s soccer team defeated Plattsburgh 1-0 in poor playing conditions on Friday in Oswego. The Lakers withstood a second half surge from the Cardinals to pick up the victory despite being outshot 23-5 in the game.

Oswego State improved to 1-1-0 in SUNY Athletic Conference play and 5-5-0 overall, while the Cardinals suffered just their second loss of the season as they fell to 7-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in league competition.

Plattsburgh controlled the tempo at the onset of the game before the Lakers fell into the groove of the game. Both teams then battled back and forth with offensive rushes deep into their offensive ends.

Tricia Sullivan (Sr., Copenhagen, N.Y.) pushed the ball up the right side of the field, nearly to the end line before serving a ball through the penalty box to Michelle Bateman, who put her shot into the left corner of the net past Cardinal goalkeeper Ricci Celia at 20:04 in the game. It was Bateman’s 12th goal of the season.

As the rain started to come down harder in the second half, Plattsburgh dominated ball possession as it tried to get back into the game. The Cardinals took shots whenever the opportunity presented itself in hopes of Laker goalkeeper Christina Fregosi (Fr., Massapequa, N.Y.) misplaying a ball or giving up an easy rebound in front of the net in the extremely wet conditions. However, Fregosi and the defense stood up to the challenge as Oswego State posted the 1-0 shutout.

Fregosi made 15 saves to record her third shutout of the season as her season mark improved to 4-3-0. Celia posted two saves, but suffered the loss.
