Fulton Speed Demons Earn First Win In Four Age Groups Of The 2009-2010 Season

The Fulton Y Speed Demons won events in four age groups and several swimmers qualified for the New York YMCA State Championship meet to be held later in the season when they matched up against the Norwich YMCA team at Granby Elementary School pool on Saturday, November 14. Many swimmers took more than 5 seconds off their time and several took first place in their event.

Among the winning age groups were the C boys (ages 11-12) which included Tim McAfee, Dakota Stoutenger, Jake LeVea, Keegan Condon, Josh Hotaling, Tabor Freeman, David Tallents, Sage Hourihan, Justin Grower, Brandon Webb, Grant Marriner, Ian Devendorf, Kyle Buck, and Andrew Distin.
Both girls and boys B groups (ages 13-14) won their age group. The girls group consisted of Hannah Jones, Courtney Beckwith, Janelle Tallents, Lacey Reich, Grace Trepasso, Courtney DeLong, and Anna Guernsey. In the boys B group swimmers were Ross Gardner, Thomas Distin and Jacob Strauss.
The last age group winners were the A boys (ages 15-18) consisting of Benjamin Davis, Scott Bullard and Josh Strauss.

Putting more distance between first and second place finishes, Casey Jones won the 50 yard breaststroke by .68 seconds for the C girls. Ben Davis won by .92 seconds in the A boys 200 yard freestyle.

In other close races, Katie Distin missed first and took second by 0.16 seconds in the 25 backstroke for E girls. Adrianna Dodge missed first and took second in the 50 backstroke by 0.74 seconds for C girls. Lacey Reich missed second and took third by .24 seconds in the 50 yard freestyle for B girls. Ben Davis missed first and took second in the 100-yard backstroke by 0.48 seconds for A boys.

Bringing in first place finishes for the team were: Jenna Ruzekowicz for E girls and Mark Tallents (2) for E boys. Sabrina Verdoliva for D girls and Michael Mankiewicz for D boys. Aliyah Conner and Casey Jones for C girls and Keegan Condon, Tim McAfee, Sage Hourihan and Kyle Buck for C boys. Courtney Beckwith (2), Janelle Tallents (2) and Hannah Jones for the B girls and Jake Strauss(2) and Thomas Distin for B boys, and Daisy Ruiz and Julia Endres for the A girls and Ben Davis (2) and Josh Strauss (2) for A boys.

Four swimmers qualified during the meet to swim in the New York YMCA State Meet that will be held in Buffalo in March. These swimmers included Janelle Tallents for the 200 IM, 100 free, 100 fly and the 100 backstroke. Jenna Ruzekowicz for the 25 freestyle, Courtney Beckwith for 100 breaststroke and Benjamin Davis for the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Swimmers qualified for states by bringing in times under the qualifying standard in individual events.

With emphasis on individual improvement, several swimmers were noted for taking substantial time off of their individual events. These swimmers took more than 5 seconds off for the 200 freestyle: Kate Thompson took off 32.79 seconds, Casey Jones took off 26.62 seconds, Keegan Condon took off 14.34 seconds, Ian Devendorf took off 9.40 seconds, Rachel LeVea took off 6.94 seconds and Grace Trepasso removed 6.92 seconds from their time.For the 200 IM, Kyle Buck took off 5.00 seconds from his time.

In the 100 freestyle swimmers that were noted for taking substantial time off were: Koji Burdic took off 49.48 seconds, Zoe June took off 15.63 seconds, Sarah Tallents took off 7.93 seconds, Kenneth Verdoliva took off 7.31 seconds, Keegan Condon took off 6.80 seconds, and Mark Tallents removed 6.63 seconds. In the 100 backstroke Janelle Tallents removed 5.17 seconds.

For the 50 freestyle Griffin Marriner removed 26.01 seconds, Jenna Ruzekowicz took off .36 seconds and Kenneth Verdoliva took off 6.13 seconds. In the 50 backstroke Kate Thompson took off 5.60 second and
Paige Drake removed 5.46 seconds. For the breast stroke Casey Jones removed 20.04 seconds.

In the 25 freestyle Lane Rawls removed 11.63 seconds and in the 25 backstroke Sam Johnston took off 5.75 seconds.

In recognition of their efforts during practices and the meet against Norwich, Coach Cathy Peterson named the following swimmers as the team’s Swimmers of the week: Katie Distin, Jenna Ruzekowicz, Mark Tallents, Kyle Hotaling, Lane Rawls, Rachel LeVea, Audrey Johnston, Sarah Tallents, Zoe June, Kenneth Verdoliva, Casey Jones, Kate Thompson, David Tallents, Sage Hourihan, Keegan Condon, Tabor Freeman, Kyle Buck, Grace Trepasso and Janelle Tallents.

The Fulton Y Speed Demons wish to welcome some new faces to this year’s team. Swimming in their first ever dual meet were: Hayden Williamson, Airyona Croci, Lane Rawls, Sam Johnston, Cameron Grower, Kali Spaulding, Alicia Carroll, Emma Easter, Meghan Foster, Zoe June, Abbey Zych, and Dakota Stoutenger. We are also pleased to have Samantha Tanner rejoin the team after taking a year off. Coaches Cathy Peterson, Cassandra Izyk, and Nathaniel Davis are happy to be joined by new assistant coach, and former Speed Demon team member, Brian Howard.
