OSWEGO, NY – Individual efforts have been the highlights for the golf team while the volleyball squads continue to excel and the tennis team eked out a win. Sports action has been heavy for Oswego student-athletes.
Joyce Shines On Links
Oswego golfers suffered another defeat on Tuesday, losing to a veteran CNS squad in the rain at Northern Pines Golf Club in North Syracuse by a final stroke count of 189-197.
The loss brought Oswego’s overall record to 11-5 (6-4 in league play) and further magnified the importance of the team’s final match of the season, which will be played at Woodcrest Golf Club, home to conference leading Fayetteville Manlius.
If the Bucs want any shot at a league title, they will need to win this final match in an unfriendly environment – F-M has not lost at home yet this season.
Scoring for the Bucs in the CNS match were Oswego golfers Colin Joyce (38), Brandon Tracz (39), Austin Tracz (39), Sam Lalonde (40), and Alec Kunzwiler (41).
Coach Dan Rose said, “This was Colin Joyce’s first time as team medalist this season and he earned it the hard way. Playing through cold temperatures and intermittent rain showers, Joyce trudged through the puddle lined fairways and avoided the water filled bunkers on his way to a solid round of 3-over-par 38. He has been hampered this season by a sore shoulder, the result of a surgery he underwent in the off-season. Recently, though, Colin’s game has showed signs of coming together. It might be good timing for Colin, who will complete in the sectional tournament on Thursday with 6 other team members. At stake, the team sectional title and a spot in the field at the state qualifying tournament next spring.â€
For now, Joyce will prepare himself, like the rest of the Bucs, for the final match of the season on Wednesday. They will all be hoping for a sunny end to the season.
The boys’ varsity golf team lost to league leading West Genesee on Monday by a final stroke count of 192-212 at rain-soaked Westvale Golf Club in Camillus.
In addition to the rain, a cold October breeze made playing conditions hand-numbingly difficult, and as a result, no Oswego Golfer was able to manage a score under 40.
“At this stage in the season, a player’s stamina is definitely tested,†commented Coach Rose after the grueling 2 hour and 30 minute competition which included 40-degree see-your-breath temperature readings.
“Most of these guys have now played competitive golf pretty much every day for the better part of three months. That much golf does take its toll,†he added.
West Genesee fought through the difficult conditions to hand the Bucs their fourth loss of the season thanks in large part to the play of Luke Smith, whose round of one-over-par 35 was the best of the day and included 2 birdies.
Scoring for Oswego were Austin Tracz (40), Sam Lalonde (42), Matt Krocke (43), Alec Kunzwiler (43), and Dylan Morgia (44).
Varsity Soccer Falls
The Oswego boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer team squared off against Liverpool earlier this week.
The girls lost a 3-0 decision to the 7-1 Warriors despite the 18 saves by keeper Jamie Bouffard. The Bucs dropped to 4-4-1 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Meanwhile, the boys lost a 4-2 verdict to the Warriors.
Oswego held a 1-0 lead at the half, but it was an offensive explosion in the second as Liverpool gained its fifth win of the year.
Stephen Auyer continued his torrid pace with a two-goal performance for the only tallies for the Bucs.
Matt Skinner finished with a dozen saves for the Bucs.
Varsity Tennis Action
Oswego earned its fifth win of the year with a 4-3 win over Rome Free in tennis action.
First singles Dominique Canale defeated Jordan General 6-2, 6-3 for a Buc point. The other two singles each fell. Nicole Anken of RFA defeated Aubrey Schrader 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 while Emily Rumrill lost to Alexis Bravo 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles action Sarah Mancuso and Allison Yule defeated Nicole Campbell and Sara Luczak 10-5 in first double while in the second double the Buc duo of Ashley Deveney and Alison Knight defeated Alyssa Cavalier and Jessie Flaim 10-2.
Oswego’s fourth doubles of Rebecca Krass and Joanna LaFerve won over Lauren Bendall and Helen Waterman 10-6. The only doubles squad losing for the Bucs was the third doubles of Cathryn Darling and Tayler Bowman 10-9 and 7-2.
Varsity Volleyball In Action
The Oswego varsity Lady Bucs volleyball team defeated Henninger in three straight games 25-6, 25-9 and 25-9.
The Bucs moved to 7-1 in CNYCL American action and 8-2 overall.
Emily Barlow had five kills and two digs while Jasmine Davis finished with seven kills, five aces and two digs. Rebecca Martin had a kill and two blocks while Mary Montagnola finished with seven digs.
Maggie Mooney carded five aces while Carlie Morley finished with five kills, an ace and a block. Laura Naron had a kill and three assists while Kelsey Ross had four kill’s four aces and two digs.
Krisi Stemple ended up with 26 assists, 10 aces and three kills along with two digs while Cydney Ward had five kills and a block.
Jayvee Volleyball Remains Unbeaten
The jayvee girls’ volleyball team also continued its winning ways moving to 10-0 on the year.
Coach Ted Beers said, “We served the way we need to day in and day out and that is simply the biggest difference in our game play when teams come into our gym, we serve them out of the game. We know we have to play a good block game, serve game, and cover the tips that will come our way.â€
Oswego won 25-9 and 25-10.
For the Bucs Mikayla Allen had a kill, Emilee Anderson six aces and Erica Atkins a kill and ace. Cat Clancy finished with a kill and three aces while Madi Collins had two aces and three assists.
Alexa Healy finished with five assists and an ace while Emily Henderson had a kill and a dig. Courtney Lavere had a kill and ace while Molly Malone and Ally McPherson each had a kill. Cortnie Purce had a kill and an ace as did Sarah Stoebner and Bella Winkelstine had three kills and two aces.
Jayvee Tennis Falls
Oswego lost to Baldwinsville 6-1 in jayvee tennis action as second singles Hayley Adams was the long winner with an 8-2 win over her opponent.
Modified Swimming
The girls’ modified swim team lost to a strong JD team 92-57 in recent action.
Mariah Metcalf won the 100 IM (1:16.23) and the 50 Freestyle (29.37) for the Bucs. Zoe Ferris won the 50 Backstroke (37.40). Ayla Busch placed second in the 200 Freestyle (2:38.48). Sydney LeRoy placed third in the 100 Free (1:13.31).
Elaina Rando placed second in the 50 Fly (38.61).
Strong efforts were turned in by Erin Delaney, and Kayla Becksted.
