Jimmy Phelps Makes Late Charge To Win Big Block Modified Feature At The Fulton Speedway

By Dave Medler

FULTON, NY –  Jimmy Phelps out of Baldwinsville, NY said going into Saturday night that his J&B Installations;No.99j; Troyer has been down on horsepower and his crew continued to look for a solution Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway.

Phelps might not have found his engine problems, but he had enough horse power to make a late charge and pick-up the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified win. Phelps got around Mike Bowman on lap 27 and once in the lead drove away for his first Fulton win of the year. With his victory Phelps now holds an eight-point lead over Billy Decker in the standings.

Other winners on Stadium International Trucks; Dig Safely NY Night were, Jeremy Pitcher SUNY Canton Sportsman; Bodie Bellinger NAPA Late Models; Tony Finch II E&V Energy Novice Sportsman; Doug Williams Mod Lites and Keith Zirbel Four Cylinder Stocks.

Mike Ward and Shane Donath led the 24 car Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified field down to the green with Donath grabbing the early advantage in the 35 lap feature.

With 10 laps complete Donath, Jim Witko Jr. and Mike Bowman were in a tight battle for the top-spot , with Matt Fink and Chuck Bower showing in fourth and fifth. Just 3 laps later, Bowman working the high side bolted into the lead and quickly opened a few car length advantage.

At the halfway point, Bowman opened a full straightaway cushion as Fink ran alone in second. Witko, Jimmy Phelps who started 11th and Donath fought hard for third through fifth.

With 10 laps to go, Bowman and Phelps were in a two-car breakaway as Phelps started narrowing the margin between himself and Bowman.

On lap 27 Phelps running the top of the speedway found the speed he needed to blast around Bowman and into the lead. Over the remaining laps Bowman tried fighting back using the low groove, but Phelps was too quick as he was able to drive away and be the first under the checkers for the popular win over Bowman. Jim Witko edged Matt Fink for third with Chuck Bower finishing fifth.

Jeremy Pitcher’s only win earlier in the season; he led only the final lap to grab the win for the point’s leader. Saturday night Pitcher left little doubt as he was the quickest car in the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature.

Pitcher grabbed the lead on lap 9 from Doug Cook and dominated the rest of the way, even with late cautions to tighten the field up for one last shot at his lead. Bob Henry Jr.; Greg Kimball; Doug Cook and Greg Mrzywka rounded out the top-five.

Rookie Bodie Bellinger who has been making a name for himself in the NAPA Late Models earned a hard fought 20 lap victory. For Bellinger it was his second win of the year at the Fulton Speedway.

The win was anything but easy for the Eastern NY driver as he had to hold off first, Larry Wight and then point’s leader Tim Sears Jr.by less than a second at the checkers. Sean Beardsley, Gus Schmidt and Alan Fink finished third through fifth.

Tony Finch II once again was the class of the field in the E&V Energy Novice Sportsman as he dominated the 15 lap feature for his fourth win of the year. Ron Davis III, Jim Graham, Scott Ford and Deven Boyce chased Finch across the line.

The most serious incident of the night happened in the Mod Lite feature. On the 4th lap, Sam Usborne did a series of nasty snap rolls in the first turn brining out the red flag. Fortunately Usborne was okay, but the same couldn’t be said about his destroyed race car.

In the feature Doug Williams cruised to the easy win, his fifth of the season. Jamie King, Jim Bogett, Cody Fleming and Ricky Yelle completed the top-five.

Keith Zirbel took the lead on the first lap of the 15 lap Four Cylinder Stock feature and never looked back as he outran point’s leader Jerry Herbert to the checkers. Eric M Zirbel, Josh Verne and Mark Johnston finished second through fifth.

This coming Saturday night August 6th, Tracey Road Equipment presents a night of high speed racing action featuring the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds; SUNY Canton Sportsman; NAPA Late Models; E&V Energy Novice Sportsman; Mod Lites; Four Cylinder Stocks plus Lawn Mower Races.
