On Wednesday, the Oswego Boy’s Varsity Golf Team competed in their highly anticipated first match of the 2012 season against host team Cicero North Syracuse and visiting Central Square at Beaumont Greens in Brewerton. The skies were blue, the sun was shining, and the ground was firm for the Buc golfers — a formula that usually produces low scoring.
Oswego did not disappoint on this day.
The team’s total of 183 included 5 scores under 40 and asizzling round of two-under-par 34 from sophomore Alec Kunzwiler.
“We knew it was going to be a close match,” said Coach Dan Rose on the bus ride home. “With the level of competition in the league this season, most of our matches will probably come down to a couple of strokes. Well, it came right down to the final scorecard today.”
And that last card belonged to first-year varsity player Noah Lee.
With seven of the eight varsity groups in and accounted for, Oswego trailed CNS by one stroke. The Bucs needed a score of 40 or better from their final player to win the match.
To make the situation even more intense, Lee was competing in his first ever match as a member of the varsity golf team.
When Lee finally made it to the scoring table, his smile told the story. He had birdied his final two holes to shoot 38.
Oswego won thematch by 3 strokes.
“Fine start to a golfing career,” Rose said about his freshman player. “What I like most about Noah’s game is his demeanor. He never seems to get rattled.”
Not to be outdone on this day was the play of seniors Luke Boshart and Collin Daino who both shot even par scores of 36 on the front side at Beaumont.
Daino, admittedly not the flashiest of players, used his laser-like drives and pin-point accuracy to accumulate 9 pars on the day. The only player on the team who did not card a bogey, Daino would love to continue that streak all season.
Boshart, who was voted team captain on the bus-ride home, made two birdies in his round of 36.
But the real story of the day was the play of young Alec Kunzwiler, who even with a final hole bogey managed a match best round of 34.
The round included a near hole-in-one, 2 birdies and an eagle.
“It was clear when Alec joined our team three years ago that he had talent,” Rose said. “He was a heck of a player and a major contributor in seventh grade. He’s only gotten better with age. We are going to need solid play from Alec all year if we hope to accomplish our pre-season goals.”
So far, Oswego seems well on its way to reaching those goals.
The Bucs will next face perennial powerhouse FayettevilleManlius at Woodcrest Golf Club on Friday.
Oswego is now 3-0 this season.
