Laker men’s soccer team blanks Fredonia

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Juniors Brendan Beisner (West Islip, N.Y.) and Mike Naab (Ontario, N.Y.) both netted their first goals of the season to lift the Oswego State men’s soccer team (2-8-1, 1-3-1 SUNYAC) to a 2-0 win over conference foe Fredonia (3-10-0, 2-2-0 SUNYAC).

With the win, the Lakers add a much-needed win to their State University of New York Athletic Conference record, as they look to claw back into the playoff picture.

On just the second shot of the game in the seventh minute, Beisner headed home a cross from junior Ryan Tibbetts (Liverpool, N.Y.) to earn the early lead for the home team. Beisner met the ball just as it entered the goal area and knocked it into the right side of the net.

Oswego State outshot its opponents 6-2 in the first half with excellent ball control and precise passing. With less than five minutes left in the first stanza, Brandyn Peters (Jr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) slipped behind the defense to earn a one-on-one chance with Fredonia goalie Mike Schreiner. Peters struck a shot that Schreiner barely deflected into the crossbar to maintain the 1-0 deficit heading into the half.

The Lakers doubled their lead at 67:15 when Naab knocked in a header of his own. Freshman Patrick Sprague beat a defender on the right side and lofted a ball, which Jim Manton (So., Deer Park, N.Y.) flicked on to Naab who put the ball away.

Lakers senior goalie P.J. Goodwin (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) preserved the shutout with 11 minutes remaining when he made a diving stop on a Fredonia shot headed for the low left corner of the net. The Blue Devils outshot the Lakers 9-5 in the second half, but Goodwin and the Lakers defense kept them off the scoreboard.

Goodwin earned the clean sheet with five saves for the Lakers. Schreiner registered five stops in the loss.

Oswego State hosts Buffalo State Saturday (Oct. 6) at 1 p.m. on Senior Day for the Lakers, in which they will honor Goodwin and senior Pat Breen (Palmyra, N.Y.) before the contest. missing or outdated ad config
