Laker Women’s Basketball Team Gets First Win

CANTON, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s basketball team earned its first win of the season, topping SUNY Canton on the road Tuesday evening. With the victory, Oswego improves to 1-4 on the year while Canton falls to the same record.

Both teams exchanged blows in the first quarter, ending with the Lakers holding the 15-10 edge over the Roos. Oswego took charge during the second though, as Courtney Ameele and Tayler Sorell hit back-to-back threes that sparked a 20-to-8 run to close out the half.

The Lakers took the momentum into the third, scoring eight points in the first 3:30 while holding Canton to only one.

The lead would be 21 going into the fourth, but the Roos would not back down, scoring 21 in the final 10 minutes.

Oswego was able to hold them off though, eventually sealing the 61-53 victory.

Alison Nunziato led the team in scoring, doubling her total points on the season with 14. Sarah Feminella nabbed a season high as well, collecting 11 points in 22 minutes of play.

From beyond the arc, the Lakers shot 41.2% (7-for-17), including two from Ameele.

Junior Allie Izzo controlled the paint, reining in a team-high nine boards. Zana Dillard and Nunziato also contributed as they recorded seven a piece.

Women’s basketball will return to action with its first bit of SUNYAC play as they square off against Fredonia.
