Lakers Slay Red Dragons

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team defeated Cortland, 3-1, in NEWHL action at home on Friday night. With the victory, the Lakers move to 4-6-0 this season and 2-3-0 in conference play, while the Red Dragons fall to 2-5-2 overall and 1-5-1 in NEWHL matchups.

After a scoreless first period, the Lakers took the lead just over 3:30 into the second. Philomena Teggart sped down the left side of the ice, feeding the puck to Sarah Grupp, who was set up in front of the net. The senior sent it past the sliding Cortland goalie to put the Lakers on the scoreboard.

Freshmen Teggart and Emma Morisette each collected an assist on the play, while Grupp notched her first goal of the season.

The Lakers tacked on two more goals in the third period. First, it was senior Olivia Ellis who slapped the puck past the Red Dragon goalie to extend the Laker lead, assisted by Victoria Blake and Natalie Giglio.

Then, after Cortland scored a shorthanded goal, Leah Czerwinski added another goal to put the Lakers up 3-1. Kate Randazzo picked up her team-leading sixth assist of the season on Czerwinski’s goal, while Grupp recorded an assist as well.

Goalie Amber Samonek played all 60 minutes in the net for the Lakers, making six saves and only allowing one goal. The six saves bring her total to 100 for the season.
