Loras Tops Lakers Men’s basketball Squad

DAYTONA, Fla. – The Oswego State men’s basketball team finished its play in the Land of Magic Classic with a 63-47 loss to Loras College on Monday night.

With the loss, the Lakers drop to 6-3 on the season while the Duhawks go to 5-6.

Senior forward Rashawn Powell filled the stat sheet despite the loss.

He led the team in points (14), steals (5) and blocks (3) while collecting the second-most Laker boards (5).

Powell shot 7-for-13 from the field in 31 minutes of action.

Also scoring in double digits for Oswego was Kyle Covley, adding 10 points, which included two 3-pointers. He also was active in other facets of the game, blocking two shots, supplying two assists and grabbing one steal.

Finishing with team-highs were Walter Sampson with seven rebounds and Brian Sortino with four assists.

The two teams battled back-and-forth during most of the first half, being tied 18-18 with 6:53 left in the period.

Loras scored nine of the half’s last 12 points to hold a 27-21 advantage headed to the break and Oswego was never able to regain the lead in the final 20 minutes.

Oswego held positive margins in several categories on the night, including points in the paint (28-22), fast-break points (8-2) and bench points (14-12).

The Lakers will open SUNYAC action in its next game when they host Oneonta at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 6 in Max Ziel Gymnasium. missing or outdated ad config
