No ‘Holiday’ For OHS Athletes

OSWEGO, NY – It wasn’t exactly a holiday for Oswego High School athletes as the indoor track teams, girls’ basketball, boys’ ice hockey and bowlers were all in action recently.

Holiday indoor track action was conducted at SUNY Cortland as the Bucs competed in the George Constantino Memorial Meet.

Junior Whitney Ford turned in a season best of 15′ in the long jump, to place fifth for the Oswego. Ford, one of the top sprinters and jumpers in the section, also lead off the Lady Bucs’s 4 x 200 meter relay of Jaime Bouffard, Deondra Smith, and Kaylin Ward, whose season best effort of 2:07.8 outdistanced all relay teams in their section.

Ford turned in a fast split of 28.4 in the race.

David Johnson, Cory Keefe, Sean Benjamin and Matt Bivens combined for a fine time of 5:52.1 in the sprint medley, to place third in their heat and ran a strong time of 1:53.8 in the 4 x 200 meter relay, to finish fourth in their race.

Ariel Bouffard, Kaylie Allen, McKenzie Demong and Leah Weis each earned bests in the sprint medley relay (6:58.0), to finish fourth in their heat.

Demong also turned in a personal best of 12.08 in the 55 meter hurdles, to place first in her heat.

Senior Ashley Deveney finished first in her flight of the shot put, with a fine toss of 24′ 3″.

Other bests for Oswego included Ariel Bouffard in the 55 meter hurdles, Jamie Bouffard in the high jump and Morgan Allen in the shot put.

Oswego will return to action next Saturday, traveling to Colgate University in Hamilton, for the CNYCL Track and Field Championships, scheduled to start at 11 a.m.

Byrne Leads Bowlers

The Festival of Lights Tournament in Western New York annually attracts a large and highly competitive field of bowlers.

Oswego sent its bowling teams to this year’s event where the boys’ finished eighth out of 33 teams and the girls were 25th.

Cameron Byrne led the Bucs with a six game total of 1,317 for a 219.5 average. Byrne bowled games of 246-221-224-233-223-170.

Following Byrne were Matt Clemons with a 1,301 for a 216.8 average as he put together games of 172-237-238-226-208-200.

The only other Buc bowling in all six games was Zach DelBrocco who had a 1,202 for a 200.3 average and games of 196-212-197-194-182-221.

The other Buc bowlers rolled three games each as Daniel Cliff had a 198 average with games of 183-163-249. Jimmy Rose averaged 185 with games of 198-164-193. Gavin Gilbert had a 549 with games of 163-197-189. Joe Clavelli finished up with a 158 average and games of 185-156-134.

Buc Hockey Returns to Winning Ways

Oswego hosted Liverpool in a boys’ ice hockey game at Crisafulli Rink on Wednesday and had an offensive explosion in the 7-2 victory.

The teams were knotted up at 1-1 after 15 minutes of play as Cody Mariano scored almost immediately after the initial drop of the puck only to have Liverpool counter just seconds later.

Oswego managed to post two more goals in the second period Austin Tracz had a power play goal and later in the period Fred Donabella tallied another man-up goal for a 3-1 lead.

It was a four-goal third period for the Bucs as Chris Pike, Josh Sova, Mariano and Tracz all put the puck behind Liverpool goalie Joe Ciciarelli.

Assists for the game were chalked up by Fred Donabella (4), John Phillips (2) along with Tracz and Sova with one each.

Between the pipes Chase Izyk had 22 saves for the 4-4 Bucs while Ciciarelli had 39 for the Warriors.

Lady Bucs Lose Tournament Game

The final game of the Linda Shoults-LaLa Ponzi Memorial Girls’ Basketball Tournament resulted in a 61-48 Westhill victory over the host Buccaneers.

The game was competitive in the early going with Oswego leading 10-8 after one quarter.  However, Westhill forced turnovers, grabbed rebounds and got a little sharper from the field to lead 27-20 at intermission.

Oswego fought back and at one time closed the game to 33-29 in the third quarter and with eight minutes to go in the game the home team trailed 40-32.

The Bucs attempted to trim the deficit, but in the end the guard oriented Westhill offense was too much to over come as the visitors outscored the Bucs 21-16 in the final quarter.

For the Bucs Becca Martin had 12 points while Courtney Louis and Lexi Gillard had 10 points. Taylor Giglio scored nine while Samantha McCarrick tallied five and Kelsey Ross had two points.

For Westhill Ashley Cianfriglia had a 20 point night while freshmen Sam Peebles and Anna Ross had 15 each.

Jayvee Girls’ Win Over Mexico

The Oswego jayvee girls’ came out fast and held a 23-12 halftime edge over Mexico.

The Buccaneers pressured the ball with tremendous defense. With a team effort and everyone playing Oswego took the win.

Nine out of the ten players scored for the Bucs as Oswego won 43-31.
