OSWEGO, NY – Exciting sports action has kept Oswego High School athletes in the spotlight this week with swimmers, hockey and bowling all victorious with the wrestlers also in action.
Swimmers Win Again
The Oswego High School boys’ varsity swimming team dominated Cicero-North Syracuse with a 102-75 victory on Wednesday night.
Already several Bucs have qualified for state and sectional post season competition and more names were added in this meet as divers Alex Carl and Austin DeMott earned sports in the Section III meet.
Oswego in winning its fourth meet of the year with only one loss and a tie captured a dozen victories.
The 200 yard medley relay team of Reeve Callen, Zach Gerber, Luke Familo and Drake Becksted won in 1:46.05.
Becksted, who already has state qualifying times, won the 200 free in 1:53.30 and the 100 breast (1:02.15).
The 100 time was solid enough to earn him his third state qualifying event of the year.
Callen won the 50 in 23.63 and the 100 back in 58.90.
Sean Stegemoller won the 200 IM in 2:13.84 while also winning the 100 free in 52.20. Gerber won the 100 fly in 59.30 and Josh Saternow the grueling 500 in 5:53.40.
Runner up finishes for the Bucs included Geoff Taylor in the 200 medley, Familo in the 50 free and 100 free, Carl in diving as well as Jim Dillon in the 500 and the 200 medley relay team of Jeremy Galvin, Taylor, Kyle Kunzwiler and Alex Kemper.
Bowling Sweeps Genny
Oswego boys’ won all three games against West Genesee in recent bowling action.
The Bucs won the first game 1,111-999, the second 1,021-843 and the third 1,043-796.
Gavin Gilbert had a 702 series and was followed by Dan Cliff 627, Matt Clemons 618, and Cameron Byrne 590.
Zack DelBrocco had a two game scored of 384 while Joey Clavelli had one game, but it was a sensational 254.
In girls’ action the lady Bucs lost 777-772, won 728-726 and lost 625-615.
Ashlee Lytle had a 549 series while Christie Hoefer was 478, Paige Blum 417, Courtney Bartlett 377 while Brittney Noyes had a 205 score for two games and Allison Martin an 89 for her lone game.
Big Win for Buc Hockey
The Oswego High School boys’ hockey team has put together a very solid season and on Thursday night at Crisafulli Rink the Bucs broke open a tie game for a 6-3 victory over state ranked Clinton.
After two periods the scored was knotted at 2-2, but Oswego came out of the locker room with a vengeance and scored three quick goals during a four-goal third period.
In the first period Fred Donabella scored the first goal of the game with a tough angle shot from along the boards which got past Clinton goalie Corey Harris.
Moments later Josh Sova had a highlight reel goal as he weaved and deked his way through Clinton players to put the Bucs up 2-0.
However in the second penalty fever hit the Bucs and Clinton took advantage as Will Blazer scored in the first minute of the middle session.
With less than two minutes remaining in the period Luke Lauchert backhanded a rebound home for a 2-2 score.
The third period was going to be critical for the post season hopes of both teams as they are battling for home ice.
After a melee at the end of the second period the penalty boxes were packed and Clinton had a 4 on 3 on ice advantage.
The Bucs penalty killing unit did its job and then ended up with a man advantage.
John Phillips threaded the needle from the left point and put the puck over the glove of the goalie for a 3-2 Buc lead.
Just a few minutes later Sova made a perfect pass to Donabella as he rifled home a shot from the slot for a 4-2 advantage.
Donabella completed the hat trick as he easily beat the goalie with just over eight minutes left.
Each team managed one late goal as Blazer scored to close the gap only to have Sova, receiving a perfect pass from Donabella, complete the scoring.
Chase Izyk was in the net for the Bucs as he stopped 27 shots.
At the other end, Harris had just 20 saves.
Assists were picked up by Sova (3), Jon Kaplewicz, Phillips, Donabella, Cody Mariano and Chris Pike.
The Bucs moved to 8-4 in league play and 11-5 overall while Clinton moved to 7-3 and 10-3 overall.
Wrestlers in Action
Oswego met Liverpool on the mat with the Warriors scoring a 69-9 win over the Bucs.
Once again Oswego was forced into forfeits at 103, 112, 140, 145 and 285.
In action, at 189 Dan Ellingwood decisioned Brendan Capria 2-1 while at 215 Jacob Rodriguez defeated Sean Munson of Liverpool.
At 152 a solid match was completed with Eric Susino-Acton of Oswego losing a 4-2 verdict to Dakota Inman.
The other matches saw pins as at 119 Jordan Attwood was pinned in 1:10 by Nate Hathaway.
At 125 Matt DiFabio was pinned in 57 seconds by Lucas Casetllanos.
Jordan Pluff, at 135, lost in 2:40 to Tyler Eason while at 160 Adam Doviak was pinned in 1:41 by Mende Cukalevski.
The final pin came at the 171 pound division as Mike Ruggio lost to Joe Pizzuto in 3:45.
Jayvee Mat Action
Liverpool won the lone jayvee match as Colt Simmons of Oswego lost in 2:24 to Bryan Merrill at 160.
