OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego boys’ tennis and girls’ golf team has wrapped up the season.
Tennis Finished Fourth
Oswego Tennis capped off another quality season with a fourth place finish at the Section 3, Class A Tournament at Syracuse University.
There was quality competition out of the 18 Class A schools, especially Fayetteville-Manlius who won the team crown followed by West Genesee and Baldwinsville. The win comes at the heels of a second place finish in the CNYCL American Division, losing only to FM and a 7-5 overall record. The Buc tennis team proved they could play with just about everyone as all, but one match was decided by two spots or less.
Matt Randall placed third in first singles with a thrilling 6-7. 6-4, 6-4 over Justin Parow. Randall was undefeated in team matches and has an overall record of 9-2 against the best competition other opponents have to offer. Randall also qualified for the interclass tennis tournament at Utica. If he places in the top three, Randall will earn a trip to the State Tennis Tournament in Flushing Meadows, New York (Site of the US Open).
Win or lose, Randall has played remarkably well as of late, earning all league first team honors.
Also playing well again this year is Austin DeMott at second singles. For the second consecutive year, DeMott placed third at second singles and only lost one match all year at the position. His efforts have made all league second team for the second year in a row. Mike Hart had a strong year at third singles, qualifying at third singles.
At the doubles positions, Ryan Patrick and Sean O’Connor earned all league first team honors after a strong season playing against the other schools’ top doubles teams. The duo won in the first round of sectionals with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win against Central Square, but then fell to eventual champ East Syracuse-Minoa.
Earning second team all conference honors were Dylan Lavner and Tim Hanisch as they had a solid 5-2 record together. The pair won in the first round vs. RFA before losing to eventual second doubles champ Baldwinsville.
Also starting and finishing with winning records were Alex Kemper and Kyle McCauley at fourth doubles, and Senior Steve Scott and Junior Stefan Mazuroski at third doubles. Kyle Kemper also contributed well as he saw starting time as just an eighth grader.
Lady Buc Golf Team Ends Year with Win
On Monday, the Oswego girls’ varsity golf team finished its 2011 regular season with a victory on Monday over West Genesee by a final margin of 219-228.
Scoring for Oswego in this hard fought match were Sarah Gosek (51), Tess Gordon (51), Courtney Kelly (55), and Michaela Kearns (62).
The team finished the season with a final overall record of 4-9 (2-6 in league play). Ashley Deveney, the team’s only senior, wrapped up her varsity career in this match, shooting a 65 on Oswego Country Club’s par 35 front nine. Ashley made huge improvements this season, and it was a pleasure to have her on the team,” said Coach Rose of his lone senior.
In a season wrought with difficult playing conditions and adverse weather patterns, the Oswego Bucs showed marked improvements from the season before – lowering their overall team stroke average and individual player averages, while increasing their pars per match average.
“I was really impressed with the girls’ resolve this year,” commented Coach Rose after the final match of the season. “With all the wet courses and mud-soaked pant-legs, wind-burned cheeks and schedule changes—they never complained. The girls showed up for practices, worked on their swings, and always tried to get better. Best of all, they had fun doing it. I’m so proud of all 15 players who participated this season.
The 15 girls that Coach Rose is referring to include the aforementioned senior Ashley Deveney- juniors Hannah Allen, Abigail Atkins, Sarah Gosek, Michaela Kearns, and Caroline Reynolds- sophomores Tess Gordon and Courtney Kelly and freshman Maddy Muckey, Tory Welsch, Meghan LiVoti, Allison Moshier, Emilee Anderson, Madi Collins, and Lauren Daniels.
Three of the 15 girls qualified for sectional play. Captain Sarah Gosek, who had the lowest stroke average on the team this season, hopes to finish the season with a strong round on the tricky tree-lined course.
Three Golfers Compete in Sectional Championship
The top three female golfers from Oswego High School competed at the Section III Championship on Tuesday afternoon – a grueling 18-hole event held at Foxfire Golf Club in Baldwinsville. Leading the way for the Bucs was team captain Sarah Gosek whose overall score of 107 placed her in the top half of the large field of 93 female golfers. Sarah’s round included two pars and a lot of solid drives and timely putts. Sarah’s good play at sectionals concludes a junior season in which she captured team medalist honors in 12 out of 13 Oswego matches, broke 50 twice, accumulated 11 pars (a team high) and maintained the lowest stroke average on the team (51). Sarah will now be focused on playing and improving her game this summer in preparation for what will be her final season as a member of the team.
Courtney Kelly also had a better than average round at Foxfire on Tuesday, carding a score of 108 after playing all 18 holes. Courtney has been a very consistent player for the Bucs this season, playing in all 13 varsity matches while maintaining the second best stroke average on the team (54). Courtney has two years of eligibility left at Oswego and looks to make big improvements in her game this summer in preparation for next year.
Tess Gordon finished her third season as a Lady Buc Golfer in 2011, and has shown steady improvements along the way. Her sectional score of 120 was not indicative of her steady play this season, where she maintained a stroke average of 55. With some summer tinkering, Gordon is looking forward to helping lead the Bucs to a strong 2012 season.
“These three girls met some pretty lofty pre-season goals,” commented Coach Rose of his three sectional competitors. “They should be proud of their play this season. I’m looking forward to seeing the levels to which the girls raise their game next season.”
