Oswego Speedway Squirts Begin League Competition

The Oswego Speedway Squirts kicked off their Central New York Tier II League games recently with contests against a pair of teams from the Mohawk Valley region.

On Saturday the Speedway Squirts traveled to Clinton to face off against last year’s league state tournament representatives. Oswego started the game slowly but excellent goaltending by Jarrett Dudley and strong denfensive play by Chase Porter, Lynch Raby, Addison Lee and Asher Zych kept the game scoreless. The Speedway Squirts broke through midway through the first period with an unassisted goal by Nate Schultzkie and the flood gates opened from there with Oswego cruised to a convincing 7-0 victory. The diverse Speedway Squirt offense was led by Trent Grimshaw (3 goals, 2 assists). Allie Rodgers and Bryce Hourigan contributed a goal and an assist apiece. Kameron Whipple tallied the other Oswego goal when he cashed in a beautiful assist by Brandon Meyers. Forward JP Ciappa added an assist for the Oswego squad. Dudley finished the shutout with 19 saves.

Sunday brought a home game against the Rome Grizzlies. The Speedway Squirts came out of the gate flying in this contest and took a 5-0 lead only 6:36 into the first period. Oswego dominated action and completed the weekend sweep with a 9-1 win. Oswego goals were scored by Hourigan (3), Ciappa (2), Billy Greene, Rodgers, Meyers and Grimshaw. Assists were earned by Rodgers (3), Meyers, Schultzkie, Greene, Porter, Raby and Grimshaw. Dudley had another strong showing in net for Oswego (15 saves).
