Oswego State baseball upsets Keystone In Season Finale

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team went out with a bang in 2012. The Lakers snapped third-ranked Keystone College’s (Pa.) 22-game winning streak with a 10-2 victory at Laker Baseball Field to finish the season with an even 20-20 record.

Timely hitting and solid defense at key points in the game proved to be the difference as the Lakers were in control for much of the game.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Laker offense put the home team in front.

Singles by John Rauseo (Fr., Mattituck, N.Y.) and Ed Charles (Jr., Auburn, N.Y.) opened the inning. Following a passed ball, Matt Miller (Sr., Montoursville, Pa.) hit a one-out single, bringing in both runners for the 2-1 lead. The Lakers loaded the bases, still with one out, but would not score another run.

Oswego State starter Adam Bishop (Jr., Camillus, N.Y.) was nearly perfect for the next two innings against the regular Keystone (32-5) line-up.

Meanwhile, the offense added to the lead when Tyler Baker (So., Hannibal, N.Y.) walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Charles in the second inning. Mike Stark (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) also singled and scored on a two-out single by Rauseo in the third frame.

Keystone scored a run in the top of the fourth, but Bishop struck out the No. 9 hitter with two runners on to end the inning.

Oswego State put the game seemingly out of reach in the bottom of the sixth with a four-run rally.

Baker walked and Rauseo singled before David Mazzullo (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) doubled home Baker. The rally continued as Miller and Alex Jurczynski (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.) hit back-to-back RBI doubles, pushing the lead to 8-2.

After working a perfect sixth inning, Bishop found trouble in the seventh inning when Keystone loaded the bases with two outs. However, Mike Putillo (Fr., Brewster, N.Y.) came in and struck out the No. 4 hitter for the Giants, ending the threat.

Oswego State added two more runs in the eighth inning when Dylan Parmenter (Jr., Bennington, Vt.) and Mazzullo singled to start the inning and scored with the help of a single by Kris Prikazsky (Sr., Endicott, N.Y.) and a pair of Keystone errors.

Brady Farkas (Sr., Clifton Park, N.Y.) recorded the first two outs of the ninth inning before Mark Schaper (Sr., Warwick, N.Y.) came in to strike out the final batter of the season and earn the Lakers the 10-2 victory.

Bishop picked up the win with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work, while Rauseo and Mazzullo each finished with two hits.

Zachary Duffy suffered the loss after allowing three runs on four hits and five walks over the first two innings. Connor Smith and Emmanuel Roman combined to give up seven runs over the final six innings. Esteban Meletiche and Chris Bzozowski posted two hits each for the Giants.

The Lakers were able to work all six seniors into the game, ending the careers of Steve Roman (Sr., Middletown, N.Y.), Miller, Mazzullo, Prikazsky, Farkas and Schaper on a high note. missing or outdated ad config
