Oswego State Mens Club Hockey News

The Oswego State Mens Club Hockey Team traveled to SUNY Canton before the Thanksgiving Break to participate in the 4th annual Terry Martin Pride’s Corners Tournament. The Lakers, who were the defending 2010 champions, defeated the University of Scranton in the first game 3-1. Oswego’s Mike Renick scored the first goal on a pass from Sam Vaimberg and Adam Webster. D.J. Mazzoni, the Laker’s leading scorer, found the back of the net in the second period giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Scranton narrowed the score by 1 as they scored at the start of the third period but Chris Covel sealed the win for the Lakers shortly after on a Chris Cavanaugh pass. Sophomore goaltender Aaron Frohm had 28 saves for Oswego.

The win secured a spot in the championship game against the host team Canton, who had defeated John Carroll to advance to the title game. The first period saw Canton scoring 3 quick goals but Oswego never gave up and Chris Covel narrowed the lead by scoring late in the first period on passes from Cavanaugh and Greg Molfese. Although the Lakers could skate with Canton, the bigger host team defeated Oswego to win the championship. Chris Timmons scored Oswego’s other goal with the assist being credited to Mazzoni. Goaltender Aaron Frohm had 36 saves and goaltender Sal Annunziata had 12 saves for Oswego.

The Canton Kangaroos, who are going NCAA D3 next year, had 4 players named to the all tournament team. D. J. Mazzoni was also awarded all tournament team honors.
