Oswego State men’s ice hockey team buries Potsdam

Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team used a well-balanced attack against SUNY Potsdam to win its first game of White Out Weekend, 7-1 on Friday.

The Lakers started the scoring early with Matt Galati scoring the first goal of the game at 2:12 in the first.

Dylan Smithand Bobby Gertsakis assisted him with the goal.

Shawn Hulshof added to the lead at 5:52. Hulshof scored on a power play advantage after Potsdam’s Nick Avgerinos was given a two-minute penalty for holding.

Gertakis and Mike Montagna assisted the goal.

Hulshof scored his second goal of the game, taking advantage of a second power play. Erick Ware was given a two-minute penalty for tripping, and Hulshof used an assist from Montagna and Kenny Neil to extend the Lakers’ lead to three at 13:20 in the second.

The scoring was halted until the second period when Mike Arnold scored for Potsdam, making the score 3-1 at 7:12 in the period.

The Lakers responded with a goal coming from Stephen Johnson at 10:50. Neil assisted with the score.

Dylan Smith used another Potsdam penalty at 19:23 to make the Lakers’ lead four with a score of 5-1.

The goal was unassisted.

Another penalty from the Bears lead to Oswego’s sixth goal of the night.

Alex Botten scored at 6:30 in the third after Mike Arnold was given a two-minute penalty for high sticking. Montagna and Gertakis assisted the goal once again.

David Titanic rounded out the scoring for the Lakers, scoring a short-handed goal at 9:12 in the period. Brandon Adams assisted the goal.

Oswego outshot Potsdam 55-27.

The team won 43 face offs in the game. Smith and Hulshof led the team with eight shots apiece.

The Lakers will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Saturday when they take on their rival, SUNY Plattsburgh, to end their White Out Weekend action.
