Oswego State Swimming and Diving Sweeps Potsdam

The Oswego State swimming and diving program returned to form with wins over Potsdam on both the men’s and women’s side on Saturday afternoon at the Laker Pool. The Laker women defeated the Bears 129-102 with multiple first place finishes from Nikki Dean (Jr., Lansing, N.Y.), Jackie Michalski (Sr., Chenango Forks, N.Y.), and Eileen McMahon (Sr., Clay, N.Y.). On the men’s side, Oswego State defeated the Bears 128-102 with multiple wins from Greg Donohue (Sr., Niskayuna, N.Y.), and Nick Dupree (So., Vestal, N.Y.). The women advanced to 5-1 in dual meet competition, while the men improved to 4-2 in dual meets.

On the diving board, McMahon took first place on the 1-meter board after tallying 256.90 points, which qualified her for the NCAA Championships, and scored 257.65 points on the 3-meter board as well. Two Laker male divers also qualified for the NCAA Championships as Shawn Merlin (Jr., Palmyra, N.Y.) scored 286.75 on the 1-meter board and Eric Messina (So., Latham, N.Y.) recorded 285.50 point on the 3-meter board.

In the pool, Dean recorded first place finishes in the 200 free (2:01.24), the 200 fly (2:18.30) and swam the lead leg on the winning 400 medley relay (4:21.05). The relay was also comprised of Delia Reed (So., Great Neck, N.Y.), Marianne Munson (Sr., Painted Post, N.Y.), and Michalski. Michalski’s other first place result was in the 400 individual medley with a winning time of 5:01.41. Additional victories on the women’s side came from senior Jenny VanEtten (Ravena, N.Y.) in the 1650 free (18:35.43), senior Kelly Williams (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) in the 50 free (25.67), and junior Keriann Earl (Weedsport, N.Y.) in the 200 backstroke (2:21.88).

Donohue had the first place time of 4:39.55 in the 400 individual medley, and swam the third leg in the winning 400 medley relay (3:43.73), which also included Brandon Hatch (So., Plattsburgh, N.Y.), Dereck Harmon (Fr., Poteet, Texas), and Kyle Lounsberry (Jr., Nichols, N.Y.). Dupree touched the wall first in two events, the 50 free (22.33) and the 100 free (49.52). Other first place finishes on the men’s side came from senior Nick Masia (Pine City, N.Y.) in the 200 freestyle (1:49.74), and Kendrick Miller (Jr., Appalachin, N.Y.) in the 200 backstroke (2:07.03).

The Lakers return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 23rd when they take on the Bengals of Buffalo State at 1 p.m. in Oswego.
