Oswego State women’s soccer team drops match to Brockport

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s soccer team (5-8-0, 2-6-0 SUNYAC) trailed 3-0 heading into halftime, as the Lakers lost to Brockport (12-1-2, 5-5-1 SUNYAC), 3-1, on a chilly Saturday afternoon.

Five minutes into the game, Brockport scored on a long pass from Kaila Maguire to Vanessa Gillette, who carried the ball up the right side of the field.

The ball went passed Emily Varonier (Sr., Miller Place, N.Y.), who was pulled out of the goal, trying to stop the shot. The Golden Eagles scored for the second time in the 31st minute on a shot that went over Varonier’s head.

Two minutes later, Brockport added another goal when Lauren Drago scored on a scramble in front of the net.

The Lakers came out in the second half more aggressively as they tried to get back into the contest. With two minutes left to play, Oswego State ended the shutout bid when Raquel Vescio (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.) scored on her own rebound for her first goal of the year.

Varonier suffered the loss with two first-half saves, as Steph Hotaling (So., Fulton, N.Y.) made three saves after coming in at halftime. Brockport’s Hannah Conine earned the win with five saves.
