Oswego River report:
According to Larry Muroski of Larry’s Oswego Salmon Shop:
The water flow has been running between 10,000 and 15,000cfs during the last week. This morning it is just over 10,000cfs. After some snow on Saturday, yesterday and today are clear. Driftboat anglers have been enjoying the higher water flow with some nice catches being reported. With higher water levels, behind the hotels is suggested when access to some areas is difficult. Steelhead, browns and rainbows are taking beads and egg sacs.
Salmon River report:
According to Whitaker’s Sport Shop & Motel:
Sunday was a cold and very windy day with snow showers in the morning and the temperature was in the teens with the wind chill factor. The lower end of the river had slush ice for most of the day, but it did clear late in the afternoon just in time for the sun to go down. With the weather conditions most anglers came off the water early and most of the anglers we spoke with had a slow day. The upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville has been producing action in the deeper holes.
Oneida Lake report:
Although we have had some colder temperatures, there is no safe ice to report on the lake. With the foot or more of snow we received last week, it will likely take some time for a good thickness to develop. The nighttime shore bite has been spotty.
Sandy Pond report:
There is no activity to report at this time. Although we have had some colder temperatures, the snow we received last week has hampered the ice formation. Please be patient and wait for safe ice.
Winter Trail Report:
Snowmobiling:
According to Pulaski/Boylston Snowmobile Club:
Although many of the trails were groomed for the weekend, there is a lot of water and many deep holes on the trail system as the temperature has not been cold enough to freeze the ground and/or water, since receiving the snow. Also riders should be careful in the corn fields off the Rail Road south of Sandy Creek as there are a lot of ruts/water. Snow is thin in the woods trails, 17 bypass is pretty much mud from one end to the other. The DEC did some logging and it’s full of ruts and mud pits. I would avoid it until we get some more snow to fill in better.
According to the Square Valley Trail Blazers:
Everything is open, Panther Lake (C-4) has been groomed to Birmingham Dr. only. Unfortunately we have had some transmission issues with the groomers. There are wet holes on every section; basically we have gotten everything packed in and defined – just think early season riding. Except for Happy Valley we will park the Groomers to let everything freeze up over the next few days. Over all conditions are fair to poor.
Cross-Country Ski Trails:
According to the Winona Forest Recreation Association:
Yesterday was another great day on the trails. Conditions were perfect. We received over six more inches of snow and a crew was out first thing grooming and setting track making for smooth and fast skiing!
According to Hugh Quinn of the Osceola Tug Hill Ski Club:
Conditions are excellent with 30 inches of snow in the last 5 days. The 40k is in excellent shape with a 6-8 inch base. Snow covered trees with a few low hanging branches are creating a beautiful setting for snowshoeing and skiing.
