Oz Roller Girls Prepare For Busy Derby Season

OSWEGO, NY – With the Oz Roller Girls’ season opener right around the corner, many activities will lead up to the kick-off bout for Oswego County’s only women’s flat track roller derby league.

Oz Roller Girls was formed in May and its 40-plus members — including skaters, refs and NSOs (nonskating officials) — have been training for the upcoming home and away season.

Oz’s first home bout is slated for 6 p.m., April 23, at the Crisafulli Rink at Fort Ontario.

They will take on the Royal Pains of the Crown City Rollerz of Cortland, a neighboring derby team that formed right before Oz Roller Girls.

To rev up the audience prior to their first home bout, Oz Roller Girls will be guest bartenders from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. April 9 at La Graf’s Pub, 287 E. 10th St. in Oswego.

The public is invited to meet the derby girls and register for a chance to win two season tickets to all of the Oz Roller Girls’ home bouts.

All tips will be donated to the Oz Roller Girls organization.

There also is an ongoing raffle for a $300 tattoo donated by one of Oz’s sponsors, Spectrum Dermagraphics, in Oswego.

Tickets for this donation will be sold during the guest bartending night, and will be drawn during Oz’s season opener April 23.

Oz Roller Girls as a league is dedicated to the community its members live in. Some proceeds from past fundraisers and raffles have been donated to local charities.

On the list this time are the VA Clinic in Oswego and the Oswego Salvation Army.

Part of the proceeds from the April 23 will be donated to the local Veterans Administration Clinic.

Also, the roller derby team is currently holding a canned food drive for the Salvation Army in an effort to help restock the food pantry.

Drop-off boxes have been placed at The Palladium-Times, Glider Oil, the Art Association of Oswego, Wicked Evil Skate Merch, Bosco and Geers, all in Oswego, and Final Cut Hair Salon in Fulton.

Those attending Oz’s first home bout are encouraged to bring in a food donation for the Salvation Army.

For the Oz Rollers Girls season opener, doors will open at 5 p.m., and the whistle blows at 6 p.m. During halftime, jam skaters will hit the track and perform on roller skates.

There will be food, beer, raffles and merchandise available at the bout.

Tickets are available online at www.ozrollergirls.com, and at Wicked Evil Skate Merch, 158 Water St., Oswego.

Presale tickets are available at discounted rates.

An after-party will be hosted at GS Steamers, with local band Small Majority providing entertainment.

The Oz Roller Girls organization always is looking for skaters, referees and other volunteers.

An open recruitment will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on May 1 at Oz’s indoor training facility in the old Real Deals store in Oswego’s Midtown Plaza.

Everyone is welcome to attend, and derby demos will be held throughout the event.
