Phoenix Native Leads Cobleskill to Soccer Win over Gallaudet

The SUNY Cobleskill women’s soccer team battled cold and windy conditions in Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon to post a 2-1 victory over host Gallaudet University in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action. The victory ends a five-game winless streak for the Fighting Tigers improving their overall record to 3-6-2 on the season including a 2-3-2 mark in NEAC play while the Bison fall to 0-9 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

The Fighting Tigers opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when sophomore forward Erica Faulkner, Margaretville, N.Y., Margaretville High School, took a pass from freshman midfielder Emily Lesperance, Harrisville, N.Y., Harrisville High School, and uncorked a rocket from 30 yards out into the upper corner of the Bison’s goal to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. After the Bison tied the contest in the 56th minute, Faulkner went to work again in the 61st minute taking a weakside feed from freshman defender Samantha Martin, Edmeston, N.Y., Edmeston High School, and blasting home the eventual game winner.

Freshman goalkeeper Jody Pendergast, Phoenix, N.Y., Phoenix High School, recorded nine saves in net to make the lead stand-up and keep Cobleskill in the hunt for a NEAC play-off bid.

The Orange & Black will next be in action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Castleton, Vt. for a non-conference meeting with the Spartans of Castleton State College beginning at 7:00 p.m.
