Second-Half Surge Powers Laker Men’s Soccer

OSWEGO, N.Y. – After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half, Zack Saccocio (So., Schenectady, N.Y.) set up a pair of second-half goals to lead the Oswego State men’s soccer team to a 4-0 win over SUNY Old Westbury on Friday.

The Lakers (1-0-0) will face Medaille in the championship game of the Oswego State Men’s Soccer Kick-Off Tournament, while the Panthers will face Alfred in the consolation round at 1 p.m. Saturday at Laker Soccer Field.

Saccocio served a ball into the penalty box where Ryan Purdy (So., Stormville, N.Y.) headed home the season’s first goal for head coach Bob Friske’s squad just over seven minutes into the second half. Saccocio tallied his second assist when his shot off the crossbar landed at the feet of Eric Widanka (So., Henrietta, N.Y.), who made no mistake on the rebound nearly 16 minutes later to put Oswego State in control of the game.

Ten minutes later, Greg Rabideau (So., Burnt Hills, N.Y.) sent a high ball into the middle of the box on a set piece where Andrew McBride (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) got just enough of his head on the ball to send it past Panther goalkeeper Marcelo Guardado to give the Lakers a 3-0 advantage.

The final goal of the game came when a pair of freshmen connected on a cross from right to left. Ryan Ivers (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) kicked a ball to the middle of the field where Matthew Hettler (Fr., Hauppauge, N.Y.) settled the pass long enough to kick the ball under the crossbar.

The first half was a quiet affair with the Lakers getting off five shots with only two on goal, while Old Westbury got off its lone shot of the game. Guardado finished the contest with four saves. Oswego State goalkeeper P.J. Goodwin (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) did not face a shot on goal.

Earlier in the day, Medaille defeated Alfred, 2-0, to earn the right to face the Lakers. missing or outdated ad config
