Speed Demon Swimmers Splash To Success

Fulton Speed Demons challenged the Cortland Stingers at the Granby Elementary pool on December 5. The Speed Demons D girls swimmers won their event, swimming were Sabrina Verdoliva, Miwa Burdic, Audrey Johnston, Josie Collins, Alisa Trudell, Kali Spaulding, Katie Curtis, Rachel LeVea, Ashli Dodge, Sarah Tallents, Emma Easter, Zoe June, Alicia Carroll, Samantha Tanner, Paige Drake, Meghan Foster, and Kayleigh Hotaling.

Several swimmers won their individual events. These swimmers were Jenna Ruzekowicz, who won two events and Katie Distin for the E girls and Mark Tallents for E boys. Miwa Burdic, who won 2 events, Sabrina Verdoliva, and Audrey Johnston, won for the D girls. Winning for the C girls was Casey Jones and Kyle Buck for the C boys. Winning for the B-girls were Lacey Reich, Janelle Tallents, and Courtney Beckwith. Ben Davis wins 3 events for the A boys. Winning the 400 freestyle relay for the A girls were Cassandra Gardner, Rachel Guernsey, Julia Endres, Daisy Ruiz won by .05 seconds. In the 100 backstroke Benjamin Davis won by .77 seconds.

Many Speed Demon swimmers had close events. Katie Distin missed 1st by .12 seconds, but took 2nd for the E girls in the 25-yard backstroke. Kaitlyn Trudell missed 2nd and took 3rd by .77 seconds for the C girls 200 freestyle. Adrianna Dodge took 2nd over 3rd by .62 seconds for the C girls 50 freestyle. Casey Jones missed 2nd and took 3rd by .88 seconds for the C girls 100 freestyle. In the C boys 200 freestyle, Andrew Distin missed 1st, but took 2nd by .54 seconds. In the B girls 200 freestyle, Courtney Beckwith missed 1st, but took 2nd by .04 seconds and Janelle Tallents missed 1st and took 2nd by .11 seconds B girls 200 IM and Lacey Reich took 1st by .29 seconds for B girls in the 50 freestyle. For the A boys 50 freestyle Scott Bullard missed 1st and took 2nd by .46 seconds.

Five swimmers qualified during the meet to swim in the New York YMCA State Meet that will be held in Buffalo in March. These swimmers included Mark Tallents for the 25 freestyle and 25 breaststroke, Scott Bullard for the 50 freestyle, Jenna Ruzekowicz for the 100 freestyle, Benjamin Davis for the 100 freestyle, and Courtney Beckwith for the 200 freestyle. Swimmers qualified for states by bringing in times under the qualifying standard in individual events.

With emphasis on individual improvement, several swimmers were noted for taking substantial time off their individual events. These swimmers took more than 5 seconds off their individual time. Swimming the 500 freestyle, Grace Trepasso took off 12.44 seconds from her time. Swimming the 200 freestyle for the girls were Courtney Beckwith took off 10.28 seconds, Courtney DeLong took off 6.69 seconds, Sabrina Verdoliva took off 41.89 seconds, and Kate Thompson took off 6.01 sec. For the boys, Brandon Webb took off 11.29 seconds, Andrew Distin took off 5.64 seconds, Tabor Freeman took off 6.84 seconds, and Michael Mankiewicz took off 9.88 seconds. Swimming the 200 IM, Jake LeVea took off 12.83 seconds.

In the 100 freestyle Thomas Distin removed 19.03 seconds, Meghan Foster took off 19.20 seconds, Ian Devendorf removed 8.17 seconds. Justin Grower removed 20.49 seconds from his time as well. Jenna Ruzekowicz removed 5.65 seconds, Dakota Stoutenger removed 8.77 seconds, Alex Semchenko took off 14.93 seconds, and Kaitlyn Trudell removed 16.11 seconds from their time. Miwa Burdic took off 20.51 seconds swimming the 100 IM.

Swimming the 50 freestyle Alex Semchenko took off 9.05 seconds and Rachel LeVea took off 5.92 seconds. In the 50 backstroke, Tabor Freeman removed 7.12 seconds, Josh Hotaling took off 6.34 seconds, Grant Marriner removed 6.90 seconds, and Sarah Tallents removed 12.64 seconds. Kyle Buck took off 15.24 seconds swimming the 50 butterfly and Jenna Ruzekowicz removed 7.93 seconds in the 25 butterfly.
