State Semis Next For Lady Buc Lacrosse Team

OSWEGO, NY – Taylor Giglio scored two quick goals against Massena in the Regional Girls’ Lacrosse Title Game on Saturday at SUNY Canton and then started to distribute the ball.

Eventually the Oswego High School girls’ lacrosse player added seven assists as the Bucs scored a 17-11 victory over Massena to advance to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B State Tournament semifinal.  Each game adds further history to the Lady Bucs program as the team will square off against Brighton of Section V on Friday at 9:30 a.m. The semifinal game will be played on the SUNY Cortland campus with the winner advancing to the title game at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Oswego jumped to a commanding 11-4 halftime lead and it appeared the game was well in hand.

However, Massena put on a five-goal run and began to close the deficit.

The Bucs eventually outscored the Section X representative 7-6 in the second half to ice the win and advance to the state semifinal.

Mikayla Place had five goals and three assists for an eight point day while Libby Sherman scored four, Alexa Healy tallied two goals and one assist while Kaitlyn Armstrong had three goals. Mackenzie Robinson also picked up an assist.

In net Tayler Bowman finished with eight saves on the day.

To reach the regional final the Lady Bucs had to square off against Horseheads at West Genny.

The game was in doubt until the final minute when Giglio laced a shot past the Horseheads keeper Erica Thomson to seal the win.

Oswego trailed 2-0 in the early going, but fought back for a 5-4 halftime lead.

In the second half it was a see-saw battle. The Bucs could have become frustrated as Horseheads simply took the air out of the ball with deliberate play.

With just over 10 minutes to go in the game the Bucs held an 8-7 lead. However, Place came back moments later with the ninth Oswego goal of the day.

Once again in the net Bowman continued to make big saves and finished with 11.

Giglio finished with four goals ad did Place.  Kaitlyn Armstrong and Lacey Brown each had a goal while Sam McCarrick had an assist.

Corey Keefe Qualifies for States

Oswego sophomore Corey Keefe continued to display his tremendous athletic talent.

Competing in the 110 high hurdles at the Section III State Qualifier Meet at CNS he remained perfect in this event with a winning time of 14.98.

This undefeated season qualifies him for the state meet this coming weekend at Cal-Mumford in the Rochester area.

Coach Erwin Dewey said, “Corey was unable to compete in his other events as he was spiked by another contestant after he crossed the finish line and required six stitches.”

Junior Mike Ruggio was the only other Buc in action as he was fifth in the shot with a toss of 44’4.75”.

Lady Buc Softball Season Ends

Oswego played powerhouse Cicero-North Syracuse in the Section III semifinal and lost a 7-0 decision to the NorthStars.

The Bucs had a solid season, but lost to the eventual section champion at Hopkins Field.

Oswego junior Whitney Ford, turned in an outstanding performance for the Oswego girls’ track team Thursday, at the Section 3 State Meet Qualifier, held on the Richard J. Nastasi Track at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

Ford, coming back strong from a recent knee injury, turned in a fine time of 27.45 against the section’s elite, to finish 6th.

“Whitney did a terrific job” said veteran Oswego coach Jim McCaul “It was really great to see her back on the track running fast again. Whitney’s work ethic and dedication has led to much success this season, both indoors and outdoors. I am looking forward to her continued success as she continues her track and field career.”
