OSWEGO COUNTY – Mexico High School junior Maddox Thomas has made his mark in the New York state football record books, finishing the 2026 season with a perfect record on extra-point attempts and a place among the state’s all-time leaders.
Thomas tied the modern-day state record for extra points made in a single game when he connected on 11 consecutive PAT kicks during the Tigers’ 79-28 home victory over Jamesville-DeWitt on Oct. 8. The 11 successful kicks tied the single-game mark shared with Cole Corcoran of Port Jervis.
After successfully converting his remaining point after kicks in the final two Tiger games of the season, Thomas has now converted all 70 extra-point attempts in his Mexico career. That puts him third in New York state history for consecutive extra points made without a miss. The state record stands at 83, set by Jamie Boyle of Monroe-Woodbury from 2006 to 2008.
Head coach Jon Gagnon said Thomas’ reliability is one of his most valuable qualities, crediting his preparation, work ethic and attention to detail.
“Maddox is one of the most valuable players on this team. Being able to count on Maddox time after time is something that is undervalued,” Gagnon said. “His success is credited to the way he prepares and the way he works. He focuses on and takes every kick seriously.”
The kicker’s consistency is part of a larger contribution to the Tigers. In addition to handling extra points, Thomas serves as Mexico’s field goal kicker and kickoff specialist. He also contributes on both sides of the ball, playing fullback on offense and linebacker on defense.
Thomas’ success on special teams is supported by fellow juniors Silas Larson, who serves as the team’s short snapper, and Lucas Warner, the holder.
The junior’s record-setting run builds on an already impressive season in 2025, when he established Mexico school records for most extra points made in a game with nine and most made in a season, converting all 43 of his attempts.
Coach Gagnon also praised Thomas’ growth as a leader and his expanded role throughout the team this season.
“This season Maddox has become a leader and a 4-down player helping us all over the field. I am so proud of him and his continued improvement each and every day,” Gagnon said.
With his senior season still ahead at Mexico, Thomas will have an opportunity to continue building on an already noteworthy career.
