William Smith Tops Laker Field Hockey

GENEVA, N.Y. – Thirteenth-ranked William Smith proved to be too much for the Oswego State field hockey team, as the Herons handed the visitors a 7-2 loss Friday night. William Smith was paced by two goals and an assist from Annie Kietzman.

Kietzman and Julia Simmons put William Smith ahead, 2-0, in the first ten minutes before Margaret McConnell scored on a penalty corner in the 14th minute for William Smith.  The Lakers trailed 4-0 at halftime after Sarah Tompson found the back of the cage in the 23rd minute.  Oswego State was unable to get a shot off during the frame, while the Herons tallied 14.

Less than a minute after a Melanie O’Connor goal, Courtney Collins (So., Fairport, N.Y.) ended the shutout bid when her shot got past goalie Taryn Little at the 40:43 mark to make the score 6-1. Lisa O’Callaghan (Fr., New Hyde Park, N.Y.) netted the Lakers’ second goal when she one-timed a cross from Taylor Stein (Sr., Endwell, N.Y.) in the closing minutes of the game.

Grace Lombardi (Fr., Ossining, N.Y.) suffered the loss after stopping six shots and allowing four goals in the first half. Nicole Moccaldi (Fr., East Islip, N.Y.) registered nine saves and gave up three goals in the second half. William Smith’s Catherine Hare earned the win after seeing time in the first half, while Little allowed two goals on three shots.
