OSWEGO, NY – Ice hockey, modified volleyball and basketball are all in action recently.
The varsity hockey team scored a decisive 7-2 victory over host Whitesboro in the season opener on Tuesday night at the Whitetown Rink.
Seven different Bucs put the puck in the net and teamwork was displayed with nine players earning assists.
Oswego put on an offensive display as the team took 34 shots on net while Oswego goalies Chase Izyk and Josh Cooley combined for 17 saves with Izyk chalking up 13 in 40 minutes of play and Cooley four in his five minute stint between the pipes.
The Bucs held a 2-1 lead after one and then added two unanswered tallies in the second for a commanding 4-1 advantage. The third period saw the Bucs outscore the home team 3-1.
Goals were scored by David Culeton, Cody Mariano, Sean Mooney, John Phillips, Jeremy Purce, Josh Sova and Trent Yule. In the assist department Tyler Grimshaw, Zach Zerrahn and Sova had two each while also earning points were Dan Maniccia, Mitch Schrader, Brandon Tracz, Mariano, and Yule.
Volleyball Off to Fast Start
The Oswego modified blue volleyball team started the season 5-0.
Oswego met up with Baldwinsville and won the five-game set.
The Bucs won 25-21, 25-22 and 28-26 as well as 25-19 before falling 25-11.
Coach Ted Beers said, “We played a much more aggressive game tonight. We have talked a lot in practices about more movement in our back row and getting the ball to our setters better than we have so far this season. The B’ville team we faced served well and forced us to move which is what we have needed to see in game play. The girls did well and we stayed in every set. We served well again which has been a strong point for us this season and continues to be, the nice thing tonight was that we passed the ball to our setters much better and we had several good kills as well as several good kill attempts. We need to take the momentum from tonight and bring it back to future games.”
Mari Atkinson had a kill and ace; Brianna Batchelor an ace; Katherine Breeze four aces and Mirada Clary four aces, two assists and a dig. Clare Culeton had a kill and ace; Morgan Demong two aces and a dig; Meg Maniccia a dig; Natasha Mezza three kills, two aces and two digs. Amber Nettles had three assists; Emily Purce three kills; Elaina Rando an ace and point block; Claire Ratzlaff an ace; Claire Richardson three kills and an ace and Lauren Sharkey a dig while Kennedy Thompson had two aces.
Oswego previously defeated Nottingham 25-11, 25-22 and 25-11 as well as 27-25 before falling 25-13.
Beers said, “We certainly had to play in a very unfamiliar setting. The gym space we played in was incredibly small. The girls had a bit of an obstacle that we have not faced this season and that was simply a lack of space. The gymnasium we were in was barely big enough for a volleyball court, so we had to change up our plans a bit and play a tighter game than we are used to. I have to say I am proud of the girls very making such an adjustment so quickly and doing very well at it. I was worried about our serving as we are accustomed to having a decent amount of space behind the serving line, tonight we only had two feet, so the girls did a great job of keeping their serves in as well as keeping the ball in play as the rule for that gym space was anything off the wall was considered out and there was no pursuit rule. I am happy how they played and overcame an obstacle we have not seen yet.”

Culeton added six aces; Demong two aces and a dig; Mason two aces; Mezza 11 aces; Nettles an assist; Purce and ace; Rando a kill, Ratzlaff a kill and three aces. Rice added an ace; Richardson a kill, Sharkey a dig and Thompson an ace for the 4-0 Bucs.
Oswego picked up its third win of the year meeting Nottingham and sweeping all five games.
Beers said, “We controlled the floor from the first whistle to the last whistle this evening. Every girl contributed tonight and again our serving game took control as it has the past few games for us as well. This week we have struggled a little with our passing and tonight we talked about settling the ball and getting it to our setter so that we can have some better kill attempts with the ball. We did a better job of that tonight and it looked like we started to relax our arms a little and get the ball to our setters or close to target. I am very happy with the week we have had and how the girls have started. We need to continue our serve game as we have and continue to try and take care of the passing in a relaxed way, if we can do that we will hit the ground running.”

Demong added three aces while Rachel Godden had an ace and dig; Maniccia three digs; Mezza three kills, eight aces and a dig; Purce two aces and a dig; Nettles two aces and an assist; Rando seven aces; Ratzlaff six aces; Rice five aces; Richardson a kill, nine aces and dig as well as a kill by Thompson.
The Bucs won three of five against Cicero-North Syracuse.
Beers said, “We had a great serving game again and totaled 39 aces against CNS. The girls have shown a great amount of improvement with our movement on the court.”

In the season opener the Bucs won 25-9, 25-15, 25-15 and lost 25-19 and 25-22 to Henninger.
Beers explained, “We were nervous when the first whistle sounded, but the girls came out of the gates flying and served incredibly well. The group of girls we have were nervous for their first game and I think their nerves calmed down a lot once we got into the first dozen points into the first set. Everyone played well, and the first three sets we seemed relaxed and poised. Overall we had 42 aces in this match, this is a big statistic for us and for this group, we served very well tonight, and so many girls got points on the board for us tonight with their serving. But like every match we need to learn from it and tonight our lesson for volleyball was that our serving will score us a great deal of points, but our bigger lesson is that we need to make sure we know where our rotation is so we do not give the other team too many points. We will use tonight’s win as a stepping stone to continue to grow. I am very proud of how we started the season out and now that we have one under our belt I have a feeling this group will not be so nervous with the upcoming games we have.”

The OMS seventh grade basketball team scored a 43-36 win over Phoenix.
Nick Sullivan led the Bucs with 10 points. Pat Dowdle and Dalton Babcock both tallied six each, while Derek Cahill scored five.
The boys won their first game of the year with a 42-20 victory over Pulaski.
The Bucs raced out to an early lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Nick Sullivan and Brandon Cheeley played well in the paint. Excellent efforts were turned in by Alex Davies, Pat Dowdle, Aaron LaTulip, Alex McCrae, and Zach Eastman.
The team dropped the season opener on the road to Central Square 53-51. Central Square hit an 18-foot jump shot with two seconds on the clock for the win.
The Bucs led throughout the contest, but Square gradually chipped away in the second half and were the team that was able to take the final shot for the win.
