Women’s Basketball Falls To the University of Rochester 66-45

The Oswego State women’s basketball team struggled offensively in a 66-45 loss to the University of Rochester on Sunday night. The Lakers shot 22.7 percent from the field on 5-of-22 shooting in the first half as they trailed 38-17 at halftime. Sophomore Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) was the only Oswego State player to reach double figures as she poured in 10 points to go along with eight rebounds. The Lakers dropped to 1-3 overall, while Rochester improved to 3-1.

The Yellowjackets hit the first basket, and never gave up the lead for the rest of the game. Tricia Sullivan (Sr., Copenhagen, N.Y.) hit a jumper to make the score 7-4 in favor of Rochester with 14:51 on the clock. However, the Yellowjackets scored ten consecutive points over the next four minutes to take a 17-4 lead. Rochester continued to add to its lead for the remainder of the frame, as it closed out the half on a 9-0 run en route to a 38-17 lead at intermission.

In the second half, Oswego State was unable to get closer than 18 points with the score 58-40 after a jump shot by Wanda Sanchez (Sr., Bronx, N.Y.) with 4:11 remaining in the contest.

Behind Kayla Ryan’s ten points, Traci Bacon (Jr., Massena, N.Y.) added seven points and eight boards. Jodie Luther and Jessica Mastronardi paced Rochester with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Yellowjackets turned 21 Laker turnovers into 26 points, while Oswego State converted 15 turnovers into seven points.
