Wrestling Room To Be Dedicated To Elmer Akley

OSWEGO, NY – Oswego legendary wrestling coach Elmer Akley will be recognized in a special ceremony on Monday (Jan. 25) at Oswego Middle School.

Monday the wrestling room, where he spent numerous years of his life, will be dedicated to the former coach.

Akley contributed to the history and success of the Oswego High School program and a year ago was honored as a member of the inaugural class of the Oswego High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

He is also a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Section III Wrestling Hall of Fame.

This will be a very special evening as Oswego and Jordan-Elbridge will be wrestling in a non-league matchup.

Elmer Akley coached the Bucs for several years and on Monday his son, Shawn, will be coaching the invading J-E Eagles.

The ceremony will be conducted in the Oswego Middle School gym.

At 4:45 p.m. wrestlers will warm up and exhibitions will follow.

At 5 p.m. the official ceremony will commence and Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist will address the gathering and family, friends and alumni will be recognized.

The official presentation of the plaque renaming the wrestling room as the “Elmer Akley Wrestling Room” will follow and it is expected the honored guest will have a few comments.
