FULTON, NY – The United Way’s Success By 6 Program wants first-time parents to know that children do come with directions!
Thanks to the generous support of Entergy’s James A. FitzPatrick Plant and a collaborative effort with a number of community organizations and concerned businesses, United Way of Greater Oswego County’s Success By 6 Program has printed and distributed a new book that provides first time parents with valuable information that will help them be responsible and effective parents.
“Thanks to the financial support we received from Entergy, who graciously paid for the printing of the book, we have been able to distribute thousands of copies of the book, Children Do Come With Directions, A Guide for Parents. This wonderful resource is the result of months of planning and research as we worked closely with many agencies that helped compile the information for this book. Now, thanks to the support we received from Entergy, the idea of publishing a book to help first time parents is a reality. We couldn’t have done it without them, and we can’t thank Entergy enough for providing the funding to pay for the design, printing and distribution of this book,†said Melanie Trexler, executive director of the United Way.
Children Do Come With Directions, A Guide for Parents, is a comprehensive guide that is filled with must have information for first time parents including:
The different stages of the first five years of a child’s life.
The importance of learning activities in the home before the child enters pre-school or kindergarten.
The meaning behind certain actions a child does.
How a parent / caregivers actions reflect upon how the child grows up to act.
Communications specialist Tammy Holden with Entergy’s FitzPatrick Plant in Oswego said that Entergy is pleased to be a part of this project and recognizes the book’s potential.
“We are proud to partner with Success by 6 and United Way on this very exciting project. This book will be a valuable resource for new parents. One of Entergy’s community focus areas is Healthy Families. We recognize that children need a good start to grow into healthy, well-adjusted adults and Children Do Come With Directions, A Guide for Parents, is filled with information to help new parents give their children that start,†she said.
Designed to aid parents and caregivers, who may find themselves in situations with their child that they don’t know how to handle, the book offers helpful answers to their questions and guides them in the right direction so that they are able to raise a child ready and developed to enter school.
Children Do Come With Directions, A Guide for Parents also contains pertinent information such as:
Important numbers and parent resources.
Pages to record immunizations, and what shots are needed when.
The different stages of development.
Important nutrition concepts.
Literacy development tips.
Health and safety guidelines.
Family life situations, what to do when your child does…
Trexler said that the book has been well received by parents as well as the county school districts and agencies that offer children’s services.
“We are happy to be able to offer this valuable resource. Bonnie Holmes and members of the Success By 6 Early Learning Committee worked tirelessly to research and compile the vast amount of information that is included in this book. Their collaboration with other community members and organizations including the Child Care and Development Council Of Oswego County, Oswego County Early Intervention, the Oswego County Public Health Department, United Way board member, Paul Scott, Vince Akissi, the Oswego Noon Rotary Club and HQ Hanson Printing is greatly appreciated. Their efforts, combined with the funding we received from Entergy’s James A. FitzPatrick Plant, which paid for the design, printing, and distribution, helped to make this book possible. We have distributed more than 3,000 copies of Children Do Come With Directions, A Guide for Parents and are hoping to have a second printing done soon to meet the demand for the book,†said Trexler.
