Weather permitting, the Oswego County Health Department will conduct an aerial spray of the Toad Harbor Swamp on the north shore of Oneida Lake this evening. The aerial spray will begin after 6 p.m. and continue until the area has been treated.
Depending upon weather conditions, spraying could take place on Thursday, August 5. The application would take place between 6 and 9 p.m. In the event of bad weather, rain dates will be on Friday, August 6 or Saturday, August 7. The actual date will be announced to the public through the news media.
“Food-borne illnesses increase during the summer months,†said Dr. Dennis Norfleet, Oswego County Public Health Director. “Given the right circumstances, harmful bacteria can quickly multiply on food to large numbers. When this happens, someone eating the food can get sick.â€
Oswego County Public Health Director Dr. Dennis Norfleet announced today that a total of eight pools of mosquitoes collected near the village of Central Square and the Toad Harbor Swamp area have tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE).
“The virus activity is developing into a situation very similar to what we had in 2009 when we had a case of human EEE in Oswego County,†said Dr. Norfleet.

Oswego Health wanted the city of Fulton to simply give up any right it might have to the land beneath the former Lee Memorial Hospital. Citizens at a public meeting last week said the city should force Oswego Health to buy the land.
The city might just be splitting the difference with its decision Monday night to ask a bankruptcy court judge to make the land issue part of Lee Memorial’s bankruptcy proceeding.
A snag has developed in Oswego Health’s plans to buy and renovate the closed Lee Memorial Hospital to house more medical services.
Bankrupt Lee Memorial doesn’t own the land the hospital building sits on.
