Kids can celebrate being “Fit and Literate” Saturday, July 24, 2010 during the 10th Annual Oswego YMCA/Harborfest Kids Fun Run sponsored by The River’s End Bookstore. The ¼ mile and 1 mile fun run will begin in front of the Oswego YMCA at 8:00am. Registration is $5.00 per child. T-shirts are guaranteed for the first 150 participants. Registration forms are available at the river’s end bookstore, the Oswego YMCA, Active.com and on the Oswego YMCA’s website. Registration will be open until 5pm, July 23, 2010 for this event.

This year, in partnership with the Oswego Reads initiative, $2.00 of every registration will go towards “Pennies for Peace”. Oswego Reads was formed with the goal to create a community wide experience that can be enjoyed by all segments and all ages of our community by embracing the same book. This year’s selection is Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. As part of this initiative, community events and activities will be held to promote literacy, discovery, sharing and dialogue of the issues and themes presented in these books. Their aim is to not only bring the Oswego community together but also raise awareness and encourage a world view that advocates understanding and tolerance.

By participating in Pennies for Peace you make a positive impact on a global scale, one penny at a time. While a penny is virtually worthless, in impoverished countries a penny buys a pencil and opens the door to literacy. Join Pennies for Peace and give lasting hope to children half a world away! For more information about Oswego Reads, please visit www.oswegoreads.com or www.riversendbookstore.com.

YMCAs are the largest not-for-profit community service organization in the nation. The proceeds from this event will go towards YMCA programs such as summer camps, childcare, teen, senior, and adult programs. We serve people of all faiths, races, ages, abilities and incomes. No one is turned away for the inability to pay.
