VOLNEY, NY – Volney Elementary School library media specialist Sarah Fay commended students for their commitment to reading throughout the school year.
During the school’s recent Accelerated Reader program assembly, kindergartners Grace McEwen and Ryleigh Williams were recognized as the top readers in their classroom, while Juliet Schnall, Carleigh Richardson and Michael Blair were named the top readers in first grade.
Students in kindergarten and first grade read a total of 3,523 books during the reader program, which took place from December through June.
Accelerated Reader participants in grades first through six who achieved 25 or more points will be treated to a picnic.
Students who achieved 100 or more points were invited to a Master’s Moment celebration in the library where they received gummie book worms, a book mark and an ice cream sandwich.
“Reading has never tasted so good,” said student Seth Godfrey.
Fay said she was proud of all students for reading and she encouraged them to continue reading throughout the summer months.
The following first grade students received top 3 medals: Kash Stuber (89.1 points), Henry Jered (74.4 points) and Chace Green (66.5 points).
Second grade top 3 students are: Owen Gilbert (293.7 points), Vardon Taplin (125 points) an Aiden Grant (110.8 points).
Third grade top 3 winners are: Aidan Brewster (126.4 points), Gianni Schmiegel (116 points) and Carter Zimmerman (61.7 points).
Ashley Taplin (251.5 points), Mackenzie Deban (160 points) and Layne Osborn (149.2 points) were named the top 3 fourth graders and Evan Zimmerman (203 points), Leah Rowlee (55.1 points) and Shayla Sykes (46.1 points) were named the top 3 fifth graders.
The top 3 sixth graders, who also were honored with a special certificate of recognition for being named the top 3 readers in school, are: Samantha Ponzo (877.5 points), Seth Godfrey (732.7 points) and Logan McDougall (538.4 points).
