Bike and Build
The Palermo United Methodist Church will again host about 30 College Students overnight on an amazing journey. They are riding bicycles across country to raise awareness of the need for affordable housing. The journey begins in Maine and ends in British Columbia. It is about 4000 and takes all summer. They ride about 100 miles/day, stopping across the country to build on Habitat for Humanity Houses.
The Atlantic to the Pacific… and everything in between. Bike & Build’s Northern U.S. (NUS) trip starts in the hills of scenic New England, touches the shores of four Great Lakes, and traverses the plains of the Midwest. This 4000 mile route will see some of the most drastic weather extremes for the summer, from the cool back roads in New York’s Adirondack National Park, to hot days on the bike through Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, before finally climbing over the Cascade Mountains in Washington (it was snowing at the top of Washington Pass last year). While the route remains in the U.S. for vast majority of the summer, the group will cross into Canada for their final two days before finishing in Vancouver.
They will be at Palermo UMC on June 30th. It will start with a Pot Luck Supper at 6 pm. They will host a bike clinic for children age 5-14 and will present a 15 minute slide show. We encourage all to come and learn what is offered by these students. Come and bring any children to learn about bike safety and much more.
