Fulton Sunrise Rotarians Hear About Rising Food Insecurity, Blessings In A Backpack Program

FULTON – Fulton’s Blessings in a Backpack program is providing food for 281 Fulton elementary school children weekly this year, an 11% increase. Doug Stevens, a leader of the free food program, told members of the Fulton Sunrise Rotary Club that it costs more than $1,100 per week to provide the food, for a program that runs on about $40,000 in corporate and community donations per year. Students receive backpacks in school on Friday with food for the weekend. Rotary Club members volunteer one weekend each month to fill backpacks. Stevens, who is also a Sunrise Rotary Club member, is at left with club President Kevin Kovacs.
